Description

PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSISTANT INTERNET-BASED DATA RETRIEVAL AND ORGANIZATION SYSTEM AND METHOD
RELATED APPLICATIONS
This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 60/169,052 filed on December 6, 1999.
FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates generally to a personal digital assistant data retrieval and organization system and method, and more particularly to a system and method for downloading data records from an online database, identifying the format of the data records and storing the data records on a personal digital assistant.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
The popularity of personal digital assistants (PDAs) has grown considerably over the past several years. Personal digital assistants can be any type of electronic device, such as a Palm Pilot® from 3Com®, or any type of cellular phone or other device which is capable of storing and organizing personal data. These devices are generally referred to as PDAs. Currently, there are over 8 million PDAs in use in the United States. PDA's are used for scheduling appointments, for keeping addresses and to do lists and even for accessing the Internet.
In order to keep files up to date on PDAs, it has become common practice to download files from the Internet. However, since most PDAs do not have Internet capability, it has only been possible to download the desired files to a desktop computer and then to synchronize the PDA with the desktop computer.
Prior art methods for downloading data to a PDA include downloading field data, such as banking data, from an Internet web site to the desktop computer; and synchronizing a remote file from an Internet server with data stored on a desktop computer. In both cases, the data can then be transferred to the PDA by synchronizing the data to the PDA.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a system and method for retrieving and organizing Internet-based data.
It is a further object of this invention to provide such a system and method for retrieving and organizing Internet-based data in which the data can be downloaded to a desktop computer for later synchronization with a personal digital assistant.
It is a further object of this invention to provide such a system and method for retrieving and organizing Internet-based data in which the data can be downloaded directly to a PDA.
It is a further object of this invention to provide such a system and method for retrieving and organizing Internet-based data in which the data that is retrieved is identified by the system and stored in an appropriate storage location on the personal digital assistant. PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Prior art data retrieval systems require that the user download entire web pages to their desktop computers. The present invention, shown generally at 10 in Fig. 1, allows a user to download portions of data 12 from an Internet web page 14. These portions of data 12 may include addresses, phone numbers, scheduled events or any other piece of information that would typically be downloaded for personal use by the user of a personal digital assistant. The data retrieval and organization system 10 includes a data selection system 16, a field filtering system 18, a data retrieval system 20 and a local storage system 22.
Data selection system 16 interfaces with the Internet web page 14 to enable the user of the system 10 to select the desired data portion 12 from the Internet web page 14. Data selection portion 16 includes an automated data selector 24 which can be operated to automatically select data portions 12 which are routinely upgraded, such as stock prices. In this case, as soon as the system 10 is initiated, the automated data selector 24 would select data from a chosen Internet web page 14 which the user has programmed the automated data selector 24 to update any data portions 12 which have changed since the previous download. Data selection system 16 also includes a manual data selector 26 which enables a user of the system 10 to manually select data portions 12 from the Internet web page 14, the manual data selector 26 can include an audio portion 28, to enable the user to select data using voice commands. The manual data selector 26 can also enable the user to select data by using the mouse to click on the data or by selecting, dragging and dropping the data into a predefined location.
Filtering system 18 includes a field tag identifier 30 for locating field identification tags 13 within the specific portions of data 12 selected by the data selection system 16. These field identification tags 13, which may be XML tags, are programmed into the data portions 12 by the host of the Internet web page in order to enable the specific portions of data 12 selected by the data selection system 16 to be identified as either an address, a phone number, an event or any other type of data. Field filtering system 18 also includes a data format recognition system 32 for comparing the specific portions of data 12 selected by the data selection system 16 with predefined data types in order to identify the types of data selected. A data parser 34 is responsive to the data format recognition system 32 for parsing the specific portions of data 12 into a plurality of discrete data field elements 35.
Data retrieval system 20 includes a remote storage system 36, which typically is a server device for storing either specific portions of data 12 selected by data selection system 16 or the discrete data field elements 35 from field filtering system 18.
Local storage system 22 includes a data correlation system 38 for relating the discrete data field elements 35 identified by the field filtering system 18 to a specified data field 42 to which the discrete data field element is to be stored within the PDA 44. A correlation interface 40 operates to specify individual relationships between each of the discrete data field elements 35 and each of the specified data fields 42 within the PDA 44.
If the PDA 44 is Internet capable, such as the Palm VII® from 3Com®, the discrete data field elements 35 are transferred directly to the local storage system 22 for storage on the PDA 44.
Another embodiment of this invention is the Internet-based data retrieval and organization method 46, Fig. 2, which includes the steps of automatically or manually selecting a specific portion of data to be downloaded into the PDA from an Internet web page, step 50, filtering the specific portion of downloaded data into a plurality of discrete data field elements, step 52 and remotely storing the plurality of discrete data fields elements on, for example, an intermediate server, step 54. The plurality of discrete data field elements is then downloaded to the PDA, step 56 and the plurality of discrete data field elements are stored in at least one specified data field within the PDA, step 58.
Another embodiment of the Internet-based data retrieval and organization method 48, Fig. 3, includes automatically or manually selecting a specific portion of data to be downloaded to the PDA, step 60, downloading the selected specific portion of data, step 62, and remotely storing the selected specific portion of data, step 64. The plurality of discrete data field elements is then downloaded to the PDA, step 162 and the plurality of discrete data field elements are stored in at least one specified data field within the PDA, step 164.
The processor 152 and memory 154 may be incorporated to a personal computer 168; a programmable controller 170; a single board computer 172; or an array of network servers 174.
