Abstract

A approach is provided for increasing the emission intensity of an organic light emitting diode (OLED) and the total external emission efficiency for an OLED at a normal viewing angle. With the approach of the invention, they have been increased by factors of 9/6 and 3.0 respectively by applying spherically shaped patterns to the back of the device substrate. The inventive approach captures light previously lost to wave-guiding in the substrate and, with proper choice of substrate, light previously lost to wave-guiding in the organ/anode layers.
