Abstract

A high bandwidth data network, such as for video, is provided which includes a regional ring with a plurality of local nodes (51), each local node including at least one fiber interface device (415) and at least one Local Node interface device for connection to a global electrical or fiber network. The Local Node interface device connects to a user interface device through a cable (413). The regional ring may communicate addressable video signals such as those for HDTV. The local node may read an addressable from the video signals and send desired video signals or packets to users, reducing the bandwidth requirement in the last mile. Various conversion protocols are also provided.
