Abstract

An ultrasonic transducer for transmitting and receiving ultrasonic energy to and from gaseous medium comprises a piezoelectric element (10) having front and back sides, an electrically conductive plating over the front side of the piezoelectric element, a transmission layer (15) of lower acoustic impedance materials abutting the plating, a facing layer of a fibrous material bonded to the transmission layer (15) without substantial penetration of the bonding agent and electrical connections for applying an exciting electrical signal to the piezoelectric element.
