- Nickel-powered storage batteries have an anode made of nickel hydroxide and a cathode made of cadmium compound.
- As the electrolytic (rechargeable battery) solution potassium hydroxide is used. During charging, the following reactions occur:
- the oxygen travels to the eclipse, where it reassociates with the power dome to form a hydroxylation dome (ie, without the production of oxygen gas).
- Cadmium hydroxide is originally a cathode discharge product. Equilibrium is achieved when the charge kinetics at the cathode has risen sufficiently to match the oxygen recombination kinetics. Therefore, the cathode is always charged below the maximum limit, but no hydrogen gas is generated. The battery is considered fully charged when the above match is achieved. Further charge is "overcharge" Called.
- overcharging current is approximately 0.3 C (ie, 100 milliamps temporary (“mAh”)) applied to the 300 milliamps (“mAh”) battery. This can be said only when the charging current is limited to At this charging rate, the internal pressure of the storage battery is maintained at 1 atm. However, if the overcharge current increases to a rate of 1 C (ie, a charging current equivalent to 100 mA applied to the 100 O mAh battery),
- the local pressure will rise to 10 bar.
- the internal pressure of the storage battery becomes even greater. Therefore, it is important to prevent the storage battery from overcharging while charging at a high charging rate.
- the present invention is for the inventor to present the following theoretical discussion which will assist those skilled in the art in understanding the present invention.
- a storage battery is an electrochemical device intended to store power. Equivalent electrical circuits can be used to establish the various conditions that occur in the battery. Note that a different equivalent circuit must be used whenever the chemical reaction in the battery changes.
- Figure 1 shows the equivalent electrical circuit for a battery when charging and discharging at a rate of 0.1 C, which is the most commonly used electrical model. Internal resistance of the storage battery,
- R interna 1 is represented as a variable resistor whose resistance is inversely proportional to the energy level in the battery. Storage As the pond charges, Rinterna I decreases as the initially high power battery becomes charged. Applying Kirchhoff's voltage law, when Rinterna 1 is high, most of the applied charging voltage falls across R internal, and very little voltage falls across the battery. As Rinterna1 decreases, most of the applied charging voltage drops across the battery. Very little voltage drops across Rint.erna1. As the battery discharges, R internal increases as the energy level of the initially low power battery degrades. Thus, there is little initial voltage drop across R internal, but this voltage drop increases as the battery energy level decreases.
- FIG. 2 shows the battery charging at a high current condition of 4 C. Is an equivalent electric circuit.
- This figure shows two internal resistors in parallel. That is, a fixed resistor R int 1 and a variable resistor R int 2.
- R int 2 corresponds to R inna 1 in Figure 1 in that the resistance of R int 2 is inversely proportional to the energy level of the battery.
- the heating caused by bit loss in R int 2 is offset by the endothermic effect of the chemical reaction.
- R int 1 represents the residual resistance component separated from R int 2 in that the resistance of R int 1 is fixed and independent of any chemical reaction that takes place in the battery, the resistance of R int 1 Is relatively small, so any effect it has during charging will only raise the overall temperature of the battery to a minimum, if not at all.
- the resistance of R int 2 decreases to a value lower than the value of R int 1, and the effect of R int 1 becomes dominant. At this point, R int 1 generates a large amount of heat, which will significantly increase the overall battery temperature.
- Figure 3 shows the relationship between R int 1 and R int 2 during storage battery discharge.
- the resistance of R intl is dominant (ie, significantly above the resistance of R int 2), so that any internal heating or terminal voltage reduction is first caused by R int 1. It is.
- R int 2 increases as the energy level of the battery decreases. In some cases, the resistance of R int 2 becomes so high that all of the battery voltage drops across R int 1 and R int 2, and nothing drops across the battery ( That is, the terminal of the storage battery A zero output voltage appears across the line).
- FIG. 4 shows the electrical equivalent circuit of a storage battery that has been overcharged.
- the resistance of R int 2 is actually zero ohms. Therefore, the only resistance remaining in the battery is represented by R int 1.
- Heating caused by R int 1 has been found to be minimal at charge rates up to 0.3 C.
- the heat generated by the cut loss in R nt1 increases in direct proportion to the increase in charge rate.
- high charge rates generate excessive amounts of oxygen.
- Oxygen recombines with the power dome at the cathode, reducing the battery voltage. This in turn increases the power dissipated by R int 1, thus further increasing heat and causing thermal runaway conditions.
- FIGS. 5 to 8 show the effect of temperature and voltage on nickel-powered dome batteries being charged at a rate of 4 C.
- FIG. Figures 5 and 6 show the relationship between battery terminal voltage and its surface temperature for various initial battery temperatures. More specifically, Figure 5 shows the battery temperature in seconds and the battery temperature in degrees Celsius ("TEMP 1") for a battery charged at a rate of 4 C and having an initial temperature of 38.8. It plots the relationship between the marked lower curve and the voltage (the upper curve marked “V 0 LT 1”). Figure 6 shows the battery temperature and FIG. 4 is a similar diagram, except that the voltage and voltage curves are marked “TEMP 2” and “V 0 LT 2”, and the initial temperature of the battery is 23.3. Figure 7 provides an expanded view of the temperature curves of Figures 5 and 6.
- the rate of increase in the voltage of the storage battery is approximately 1 millisecond per second during the first 9 minutes (from 0 to 540 seconds) to 90 seconds (from 60 milliseconds). About 4 millivolts per second (from 0 to 690 seconds), and about 8 millivolts per ridge during the next 90 seconds (from 69 to 780 seconds) You can see that it has risen to After that, the voltage of the storage battery continues to increase, but the rate of increase may decrease to about 2 millivolts per second at 830 seconds.
- the battery After a charge of about 830 seconds applied at a rate of 4 C, the battery can no longer accept energy and can be considered fully charged.
- the storage battery temperature curves in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are analyzed, it can be seen that the curves have no similarity except at the end of the charge cycle. From 0 seconds to 660 seconds, the “TEMP 1” curve shows a temperature increase of 0.097 ° C per second, while the “TEMP 2” curve actually shows 0.00 per second. This indicates a 5 7 'C temperature drop. From 660 seconds to 830 seconds, the temperature rise rate rises to 0,038 per second (TEMP1 curve) and 01'C per second (TEMP2 curve), respectively. ing. This is the rate of temperature rise when the battery is almost fully charged.
- Battery voltage exhibits unique characteristics that only occur when the battery is charged between 95% and 100%. This characteristic is that the voltage increase rate of the storage battery was continuously increasing-the decrease in the voltage increase rate of the storage battery immediately after this time. High charging rates must be interrupted to prevent the battery from being overcharged if this drop is detected.
- Battery temperature also exhibits a unique property that occurs only when the battery is charged between 95% and 100%. This characteristic is a sharp increase in the temperature rise rate of the battery at least twice. This rapid addition means that the batteries are almost fully charged and that high charging rates should be interrupted.

It is determined whether the rate exceeds twice the rate of temperature rise of the cell in the first period, and a signal for stopping supply of charging current to the cell is output based on the result of the determination.
- This is a high-speed charging device for nickel-cadmium battery having the third function of:

- the supply stop signal of the charging current based on the fifth function in the arithmetic means 6 according to the present invention is generated after the fifth function detects the first decrease in the voltage rise rate of the cell 2. It is preferable that the output is performed only when a decrease in the voltage rise rate of the cell is detected at least continuously for a plurality of times. That is, in the present invention, as shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, the voltage ratio of the voltage of the cell 2 changes from the start of the charging operation to the cell 2 until the charging operation is completed. The rate of increase in the voltage of the cell is consistently showing a rising trend. Therefore, the degree of change, which is a value obtained by differentiating the change in the voltage level of the cell, is a positive value. The rate of change obtained by differentiating this is 0 or positive, but when the charging of the cell progresses and the approximate charging rate becomes about 100%, Since the voltage rapidly reverses and decreases, the rate of increase in the voltage reverses to a negative value.
- the voltage that comes at the beginning of the continuous rise period of the voltage is used.

- the change in the voltage level is in a delicate state, especially when the charging rate of the cell approaches 100%. And a fourth arithmetic means 66 for determining whether or not the temperature rise rate of the cell at least in the first period exceeds at least twice. It is a high-speed battery
