Specification of Letters Patent.

or similar material and formed in sections hingedly or detachably connected.
The especial object of the improvements which form the subject matter of this invention is to provide atoy that is capable of being set up or arranged in various ways to produce forms to represent different objects such as houses, stalls, tents, etc.
A further object is to provide a hinged connection for the various sections that will permit the latter to be bent or turned in different directions and to be maintained in the positions to which they are moved.
A still further object is to provide for a form of connection for the various sections that will permit them to be folded flatwise in as small a compass as possible.
Other objects of general utility and economy of construction are secured through the improvements hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one application of my invention; Figs. 2 and 3 are plan views showing adaptations of my invention; Fig. 4 shows in plan view the application of a separable member, and Fig. 5 is a sectional fragmentary detail on enlarged scale showing the form of hinge to connect the various sections together.
- Referring to the details of thedrawing, 6, 7, 8, and 9, represent different members or sections of card-board which are hingedly connected to form a toy house, shown in Fig. 1. The member 6 is cut out as at 6 to form an archway and the representation of curtains as 6, the necessary design or printed matter being added to complete the illusion. On the sections 7 are printed doors 7, or if desired, these doors may be cut out in part by the user of the toy. On the sections 8 are printed representations. of pietures, and on sections 9 representations of windows with curtains, and pictures hanging on the wall. It will be understood that any suitable designs may be applied to the opposite sides of these members and that openings may be cut in said members if Application filed April 8, 1907. Serial No. 366,941.
preferred; the application of ornamentation or designs to these members not forming a part of my invention.
Tn Figs. 2, 3', and 4, I have shown different ad ustments of the various members and it will be understood that on the faces or sides of these members will be printed matter or they'will be embellished with designs suited to the respective shapes in which the members are arranged.
The hinge elements of my invention are shown at 10 and 11 in Fig. 5, and the same consist of any suitable flexible fabric or material stitched or otherwise secured to the .edges of the members 6, 7, and 8, by lines of stitching as 13. The hinge securing the left band member 7 to the corresponding member 8 consists of two separate pieces of fabric 10 placed on opposite sides of the members 7 and 8 and stitched therethrough to said members. The hinge that connects the member 6 with the left hand members 7 and 8 consists of a piece of flexible material folded into U-form and embracing the edge of the member6 as shown by 11, Fig. 5. This hinge element is also stitched or otherwise secured to the members 6 and is furthermore connected with the hinge members 10 at a point midway between the edges of the members 7 and 8, by a line of stitching as 13. The hinge construction between the central member 6 and the ri ht hand members 7 and 8 is a duplicate 0 that between the left hand member 7 and the contiguous margins of the adjacent members as above described (see Fig. 4). It will be evident, however. that the said hingeconneetions may be reversed upon opposite margins of said central member 6 making them rights and lefts, but'as such an arrangement would be readily understood and easily carried out by any one skilled in the art without the exercise of inventive skill, the said arrangement is not illustrated.
It will be understood that where there are only two members connected, the hinge will be constructed as shown by 10 in Fig. 5, but where there are three or four members. the hinge 11 will be utilized and connected with the hinge 10, 10, as shown in Fig. 5.
It will beobvious that instead of using stitching for connecting the hinge members to each of the sections 6, 7 and 8, I may use paste or glue.
In Fig. 4, I have shown a detachable member or section as 14, through which are slots 15 which are adapted to receive tongues 16 formed along the edges of the members 8 and 9. These tongues may be readily insorted in and removed from said slots in' a manner well understood in this class of devices.
For the purpose of this application for patent, Ihave shown but a few of the various arrangements of which the members 6, 7 etc. are capable and have only indicated one form of ornamentation but it will be aparent that many other combinations may e made.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
A toy device consisting of a series of rigid sheets connected in lineal order by hinges of flexible material, one of said sheets having an o ening therethrough, cooperating members mgedly attached by one margin along the junctions of said sheets, in combination with a detachable member having slots therein adapted to receive projections on the free margins of said members and the end sheets, the said sheets, members and detachable member adapted to represent the LEONARD o.
