Patented Oct. 11, 1910 Application filed February 24, 1910., Serial No. 545,746.
To all whom :it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD K.- SOUTH- WIGK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident .of Newark, in'the county of Essex and State of Ne'w'Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Light-Holders, of which the following is a specification. i
The object of this invention is to provide a lamp suitable for use in garages and other locations, in working about dark or hidden. machinery and the like, and to have the same so suspended or supported and shaded that the light may be turned to any desired direction to permit of repairs, adjustments and inspections of the machinery or parts to'be made.
One embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, in which- The reference numeral 2 designates a metal hook, which is provided, at the end of one arm thereof, with one member of a ball and socket joint, as with the female member thereof. Such female member may be formed in the ends 3 of a f0lk4, a suitable screw 5, which passes freely through onearm of said fork andwhich engages with a screw-threadedhole inthe other arm of said fork, being used to adjust the pressure of the parts 3 on the ball 6, whereby said 'ball and parts connected thereto to move therewith inay be firmly held in any position by friction and yet may be turned to any other position without one having to touchrthe=adjustmentof the screw 5. The ball 6 is "pro-' vided with an arm 7, to' which a lampsocket 8 is connected in any suitable manner, as by a screw 9, or solder 10, or both screw and solder. An electric light cable enters the socket at 11 in the usual manner, and connects the. same with a suitable electric circuit, as will be understood The socket 8 is, or may be, of a usual orknown type or form, and is provided with the usual key (not shown) fo'rsw'itching the light on and off. The hook 2 is also provided, in the preferred arrangement, with fixed and movable clamping jaws, as 12 13, so that the hook may be rigidly but detachably con 'nected with a rod,.a shaft, or the like on or about the machinery or body of an automobile to cause said hook to take and keep any desired position with respect thereto. The aw 13 as shown is swiveled on the end of a screw 1 1, which screw passes through and engages with a threaded holein abearing 15 on the hook, while 'aw '12 may be'a side of the hook, butwhic is preferably a piece of hardened steel attached to the hook 2. The clamp jaws may be serrated as shown to give them a better bite on metal.
s A reflector S is connected inany suitable manner, as by a clamp ring 16, with the socket 8, and covers about half of the bulb or lamp L, throwing the light thereof practically all in one direction, and also acting as a shield for the eyes of the workman or inspector when said shade or reflector is between the lamp and the eyes.- An open Wire guard 17 is plvotally connected at 18 with the shade S at opposite sides thereof, and is held'in place by a catch 19, or other means, which coacts with a flange 20 at the edge of the shade S. The guard 17 opens widely enough to permit of the insertion and removal of the lamps L, while the shade S is long enough to permit the lamps to be inserted, screwed down into place and unscrewed therefrom and removed, as will be understood.
hook, and the hook may be hung over a horizontal rod or the like, the lamp may be turned in any direction to cause the ight thereof to be thrown into corners and wherever desired, or the hook may be connected to vertical rods or rods so inclined that the hook will slip thereon, by the use of the clamping jaws described. The ball and socket joint permits the lamp to be rotated 3 on its axis as well as swung about the ball as a center of motion, aswill be understood.
The invention is not limited to the precise form thereof shown in the drawing and above described, but may be otherwise embodied without departing from the spirits,
and the scope of the claims herein. WVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is? 1. In a portable light-holder, the comb1- nation with a U-shapedhook having one leg of the U longer than the other and the longer leg thereof being provided with one member of a ball-and-sockct joint, of a lightreflector, a b all-and socket joint-member coacting with the'first-named joint-member to which said reflector is ri idly connected, and a clamp-screw passing t rough one leg and coacting with the other leg of said U-shapeid hook.
2. In a portable light-holder, the combination with a U-shaped hook having one leg of the U longer than the other and the longer leg thereof bein provided with one 5 member of a ball-an -socket joint, of a lamp-socket, a light-reflector, a ball-andsocket joint-member coacting with the firstnamed joint-member to which said socket and said reflector are ri idly connected, and
10 a clasp-screw passing t an improvement in Light-Holders,
EDWARD K. S,OUTHWICK.
