Description

G. R. EARNEST.
I SHELF. APPLICATION FILED SBPT.14,1909.
965,697. Patented July 26,1910.
wmw Geargefiflarnasb GEORGE E. EARNEST, on CHAIRIS, FLORIDA;
SHELF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 26, 1910.
Application filed September 14, 1909. Serial No. 517,628.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. EARNEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chairis, in the county of Leon and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shelves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to removable shelves primarily intended for use upon porch posts or the like and adapted to support a lantern or the like, and the object of this invention is to provide a shelf of this character which is extremely simple in construction, which may be readily attached to a post at a desired angle and which may be readily detached therefrom when desired.
With the above and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be fully described.
In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the device in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shelf support constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is the top plan view of the same.
In the accompanying drawing the numeral 1 designates the shelf, this shelf as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, comprises a flattened member having its rounded edges provided with a rearwardly extending portion 2 which has its face incut of an arcuate formation to correspond with the cross section of the post to which it is adapt-ed to be engaged. The body of the shelf 1 is provided upon diametrically opposite edges with a plurality of eyes designated by the numeral 3, these eyes are adjusted to engage offset ends 4 of a bail member 5, the bail 5 is constructed of a single member and is centrally bent upon itself to provide an eye from which the end arms of said bail diverge in opposite directions.
The numeral 7 designates an eye member which is positioned centrally of and toward the rear of the body 1. The eye 7 is adjusted for the reception of an offset member or eye 8 provided upon and supporting a rod 9. This rod 9 is bent upon itself, as at 10, to provide a second eye whereby the said rod is attached to the eye of the bail 5, and the free end of the rod 9 is bent to form an offset 11 which is adjusted to engage with the eye of a staple 12 attached to the post.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be noted that thestaple 12 is securely attached to the post of the porch.
In the device the offset member 4 of the bail 5 is positioned within the oppositely arranged eyes 8 to support the shelf 1 at a desired angle to the post.
IVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the improved shelf, and the details set forth as they now appear to me, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction and description as minor details within the scope of the following claims may be resorted to when desired.
I claim 1. A shelf for the purpose set forth comprising a body member, a bail upon the body member, a rod secured upon the body member and connected with the bail, said rod being provided with offsets substantially for the purpose set forth.
2. In a shelf for the purpose set forth, a body member having its diametrically opposite side provided with a plurality of eyes, a bail member having offset ends adapted to engage the said eyes, a supporting rod pivotally connected with the body and being loosely connected with the bail, said rod having its extremity provided with an offset for the purpose described.
3. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a body provided with a rearwardly extending port-ion, having its face incut of an arcuate formation, the body having its opposite side provided with a plurality of alining eyes, a bail centrally bent upon itself to provide an eye and having oppositely extending arms provided with offsets adapted to engage the eyes of the body, and a supporting rod loosely connected with the body and being bent upon itself at the rear thereof said rod being bent upon itself to form an eye which is adapted to engage the bail.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE R. EARNEST.
