RECESS-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1910.
Application filed December 26, 1908. Serial No. 469,225.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Romnrr II. Axnnnsox, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in thecounty of San Diego and State ofOalifornia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Recess-Beds, of which the following is a specification. 1 My invention relates to a bed which is turned up into a closet or recess in the day time when not required for use and which may be turned down out of the same to form a bed at night or at other times when desired, and the object is to produm a bed which is easily operated, occupies a small amount of space when down, will ventilate the bed-clothes when closed, and only require small counter weights. I accomplish these objects by means of the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a sectional clevational VlOW' of the bed when open; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof when open; Fig. 3 is a sectional elevational view when closed.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views. Referring to the tll'tUVll'lgS 1 designates a recess occupying a portion of the space in the wardrobe or said recess mav be laced i 7 in a convenient place in.the wall of the room for that puriose. On each. side of said recess are placed vertical 'rooved guides 2 in the groove of which slidi: vertically,"bala11ce wei ht box 3 and a ventilating shutter 4, said ventilating shutter rests upon stops 5 when the bed is up as shown in Fig. Said stops are placed in the sides .of the recess. The ventilating shutter resting there allows free circulation of the air through the bed when up, as shown by the arrows in Fig.
Numeral 6 shows the frame of the bed which is pivoted a short distance back from its frontend on a pipb 7 the ends extending into the walls of the recess on each side, adjacent to said pipe 7 on each side of the body 6 are pivoted levers 8 and in the front end of said body 6 stops 9 are placed on each side upon which lovers 8 are adapted to rest when the bed is lowered sufficiently;
. said lever 8 extending forward and upon which rests weight box 3 said box being provided with rollers 10 to facilitate the movement of the weight box 3 upon the levers 8. Upon the front end of the bed frame 6 is hinged a head board 11 adapted to extend to the bottom of the ventilating shutter +l when the bed is down and said ventilating shutter -t is up, thus presenting a good appearance when the bed is down. The rear end of said bed is provided with a hinged support 13 adapted to support the rear end when down and to swing .down against the bottom when the bed is closed.
As shown in Fig. 3 when the bed is closed the bottom is flush with the recess sides giving a smooth appearance.
it will be readily seen that with the above described construction when starting to open the bed it nearly balances for a short distance after which support 9 comes in Contact with lever 8 whereupon it takes up the weight 3 which acts as a counter weight and carrying it upward until when the bed body (3 would be the heaviest it comes in corn-act with the ventilating shutter 4: which adds weight'lo the weight. box and carrying it upward to the top thus the bed takes on more counter weights as it is required and leaving them off in the same manner 1;
when closing.
Illaving thus described my invention what 1. claim as new and desire to secureby l.ct-- tors latent; is: r r
l. A recess bed, comprising supporting walls, a bed frame, a supporting pipe extending into said walls and through said bed frame some distance from its head end, levers on said. bed-frame adapted to rest on stops on said frame when said frame is in a certain position, a weight box and a ventilating shutter adapted to be started separately and released when the btul-l'ra1ne reaches certain positions in opening and closing, common guides for vertically guiding the ventilating shutter and weight box, stops in the supporting walls -for stopping and supporting the ventilating shutter when partially lowercd, and a headboard hinged on said bed-frame and extending only to the bottom of said ventilating shutter when the bed is down, allts ubstantially as set forth.
2. A recess bedcomprising, supporting walls, a bed-frame pivoted some distance from the head end upon a'pipe extending into said walls, hinged supports for sup porting the outer ends of said bed-frame. levers pivoted at one end adjacent to said pivot pipe adapted to rest upon stops provided on the head end of said bed-frame when said bed-frame is in a certain position and the other end of'said lever extended so as to engage With a Weight box, seid stops,-
said Weight box, a ventilating shutter provided with stops to prevent its lowering after a short distance and adapted to contact with the Weight box when said WGight box is raised to a certain positionwhenopem ing and closing the bed, commbn guides 'for vertically guiding the ventilating shutter and weight box, a head board hinged on 10 said bed-frame and extending only to the ROBERT H. ANDERSON.
