URINAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 19, 1909.
Patented Nov. 16, 1909.
Serial No. 490,821.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ma'r'rin L. SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lolm, in the county of McCulloch, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Urinals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to surgical appliances and has an especial reference to a urinal adapted to be constantly worn by women suffering from incontinence of urine.
One object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to improve the suspending means used with devices of this character.
ith the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of a novel form of conducting pipe held in position in an improved manner.
The invent-ion further consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and ;Figure 1 is a side elevation of a urinal constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a front ele 'vation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof.
The numeral 10 indicates the body or lower part of the tube and this is provided at its lower end with a small nozzle 11 of any preferred construction. Adjacent the lower end at the point where the tube passes the ankle of the wearer there is provided a band 12 which is attached centrally to the tube and has one end provided with the usual buckle and the other with a plurality of spaced perforations to enable it to be adjusted to fit persons of different sizes.
The upper part of the tube is expanded as at 13 to form a pocket which is surrounded by an outwardly extending flange 14. This part of the tube as well as the body is constructed of soft rubber. Surrounding the mouth of the pocket- 13 is a ring of stiff but flexible wire 13 which serves to hold the mouth of the pocket open and which may be bent to cause the structure to properly cover the entire mouth of the vagina. The flange surrounding the mouth is preferably of substantially rectangular shape and is of sufficient size to extend up over the front of the wearers abdomen as well as back over the buttocks so that none of the voided urine is allowed to soil the users clothes.
In order to secure the device to the body there is provided a waist belt 15 to one end of which is attached a depending piece 16 having its upper free corner provided with a buckle 17. The other end of the waist belt is provided with the usual set of spaced perforations 18. This depending piece is substantially square in form and from its lower margin depends a central strap 19 and corner straps 20. The central strap 19 is connected to a ring 21 which is formed on the ring 13 and this strap is preferably provided with an adjusting buckle 22. The corner straps are connected to buckles 23 attached to the corners of the front part of the flange 14 and may also be adjusted for length.
A pinning strip 24 is provided for the attachment and support of the rear part of the flange 14 and this strip is provided with a centrally disposed strap 25 and corner straps 26, the strap 25 being connected to a ring 27 formed on the ring 13 and the corner straps being attached to the corners of the rear part of the flange 14.
All of the straps are preferably made of elastic but it will be noted that only the front straps are adjustable as the pinning strip provides for the adjustment at the rear.
In using this device the straps are properly adjusted as to length and the wire bent so that the mouth of the pocket will fit the abdomen. The belt is then buckled around the waist and the pinning strip brought up back of the waist and attached to the belt. The ankle strap is then adjusted about the ankle and the urinal is ready for use.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the character described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and proportions of this invention without de oarting from the material principles thereo It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is Wished to include all such as properly come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what l is claimed, is I In a device of the kind described, a tubular body portion, a pocket formed at the upper end thereof and provided with an oval mouth, an adjustable ring surrounding said mouth, and a flange extending outward from said mouth; in combination with a supporter comprising a belt, a flap depending therefrom, straps attached to the lower corners i thereof and to the front edge of the flange, a centrally disposed strap carried by said flap and attached to the front of the ring, a pinning strip, other straps attached to the corners of the pinning strip and the rear of the 15 flange, and a second centrally disposed strap attached to the pinning strip and the rear of the ring.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
MATTIE L. SHERMAN. Witnesses Mrs. F. B. ROBERTSON, MARCUS GATTIS.
