HEATING DEVICE.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. H. MoRsE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Algona, in the county of Kossuth and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Imroved Heating Device, of which the follow- '1nglis a full, clear, and exact description.
.his invention relates to a device for applying heat to a portion of ones body, and is intended to be used in the practice of therapeutics.
The object of the invention is to roduce a device of this class which is simp e in construction and which will operate to concen trate the heat upon the affected part.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device; and Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view, certain parts being broken away.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the body-of the device, which consists of a shell or hemisphere which is provided at its edge with a continuous protecting pad or rim 2. This pad is made of soft material which is ada ted to protect the body from contact wit the heated edge of the shell. On one side, the upper portion of the shell 1 is provided with an opening 3 through which an electric light 4 is inserted and held in osition in any suitable manner. The electricl ight is protected from in'ury by a screen 5, of coarse wire mesh or simiiar construction, whichds placed within the shell in the manner indicated. This screen 5 comprises a ring 6 disposed around the edge thereof, and this ring is held in position by pins 7 which project in from the side wall of the shell. When the electric light is turned on, the heat developed within it is reflected downwardly by the shell 1 toward the surface of the body against which the loweredge of the shell rests. In this way when the device is properly ap lied, the heat from the light is concentrate at the desired point.

plishes its purpose in a very simple manner,
and is much easier to repare for operation than a hot water bott e or'a similar device for the same pur ose.
Attention is ca led to the manner in which the pins 7 hold the screen 5 in position. It should be understood that the ring 6 of the screen is of too large a diameter to move up wardly in the shell beyond the point where it is placed, and the pins 7 prevent its moving downwardly; therefore, it is held securely in position.
In order to enable the screen to be removed when desired, the outer edge of the ring 6'is provided with notches as indicated at 8. These notches are arranged like the pins 7 so that they may all be brought into register if the screen is rotated into the proper position.
The feature of mounting the electric lamp in a horizontal position within the reflector, is considered highly advantageous, as by this arrangement, the lamp projects its heat more efficiently onto the surface of the body, and, furthermore, the socket of the lam then operates effectively as a handle, facilitating the handling of the heating device.
