Abstract
Description
n1×sin αin =n2×sin αref. (1)
αin is the angle to the surface normal of the light ray in the first medium impinging on the surface between the first and the second medium, and αref is the angle to the surface normal of the refracted light ray propagating in the second medium. When αref=90 degrees, total internal reflection occurs on the surface, and sin αref=1. From the relationship (1) above, it follows that:
sin αin=n2/n1×sin αref=>sin αin(TIR)=n2/n1=>αin(TIR)=sin−1 (n2/n1), where αin(TIR) indicates the critical angle for total internal reflection.
