To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN 'W. PATTEN, of North Greenbush, in the county of Rensselaer, and State of l New York, have invented a new'and improved Knifeand-ForkHolder; andl do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,

reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of .this specification, in which- Figure l is'a perspective view, showing the improved .knife-'and-fork holder applied to a plate.

Figures 2 and 3 show more particularly the construction of the holder.

Similar letters .of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

By my invention, l provide a portable knife-randfork holder, which can be readily applied to the edge of almost any plate, dish, or other vessel, and, when desired, detachedfrom the same saidholder consisting of a table or shelf forreceiving a knife and fork, which is mounted upon posts that are provided'with clasping fingers, and means for adjusting the table or shelf in a horizontal position, so ,as to adapt it for beingproperly held when applied to almost any plate or vessel, as will be hereinafter-explained.

To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation. Y l y In the accompanying drawings, A represents a shelf, which may be made ifmetal or other suitable mates rial, either of the form shown in the drawings, or of any other convenient form for receiving and supporting la knife and fork,as representedin iig. 1.' This shelf is mounted upon. two perpendicular posts or rods, B B, between the lower ends of which a rod, C,

To therod G, -springafingers D Dare secured, which project fromthe rod at right angles to it, and serve as clasps for receiving vand embracing the edge `f the plate or pan, and securing the holder to the same.

As it is intended to have theimproved holder applicable to various forms of dishes and pans, I. attach the rod C to the posts B B, by means of set-screws a a, which pass loosely through the posts, and are tapped into the ends of -said rod, as shown in iig. 3. By loosening the set-screws c a, the rodfwith' its springdingers D D, can be adjusted, and the latter set at any desired angle.

Each o'ne of the lspring-fingers D consists.' of apiece of spring-metal, 'curved as shown in iig. 2, so as to receive the rim or' edge of a plate or pan, -and clasp the saine with suflicient firmness to support the shelf A,
