A Mesas-w a se @met @fitta a JOHN R. WIDGEON AND FRED. E. FREY, OF BUCYRUS, OHIO. Letters PatcntNo. 83,013, dated October 13, 1868; antcdated September 26, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC BOILER-FEBDERS.
AThe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, J CHN R. WIDGEON and FRED. E. FREY, of Bucyrus, Crawford county, Ohio, have invented a new and improved Construction of Automatic Boiler-Feeders; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled -in the art to make and use the same, reference `being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a vertical section of this invention, taken in the plane indicated by the linexs'c, iig. 2.
Figure 2 is a plane or top view of the same.
Figurel 3 is a front elevation of the driving-gear detached.
Figure 4 is a face view of the seat detached.
.Figure 5 is an inside elevation of the revolving chamber. 'y
Figure 6 is a perspective View of the insidel and partially of the outside of a case which encloses the automatic boiler-feeder, indicated by figs. 1, 2, 3, 4,
` and 5, and which is described in Letters Patent issued to said JOHN R. WrnGEoN and FRED. E. FREY, March 13, A. D. 1866, and the specifications thereto attached.
Figlue 7 is a small steam-pipe, p', leading from pipe h, tig. l, into the interior of the casing Q, iig. 6.
This present improvement vconsists in the construction of boer-ieeders of that class in which a revolving chamber is used steam-tight.
A represents a chamber, made of metal or any other suitable material, and provided with a `solid bottom, a, and top b, and also with a toothed rim, c. This chamber revolves ou a centre-pin, d', and its bottom, a, works steam-tight against the seat B, which is composed ot' a thicklat plate, perforated with four holes, l e fg, as seen in fig. 4. The opening,'e, communicates, through the pipe h, with the steam-space, and the opening, g, through a pipe, t, with the water-space of a steam-boiler. From the hole (Z leads a pipe, j, to the open atmosphere, and another pipe, k, leading from the hole f to the water-tank, serves to introduce the required supply of water into the chamber A. Said chamber is provided with the ports im, one diametrically opposite the other, and as said chamber revolves, these parts alternately coincide with the holes d and j, and then with the holes c and g and the seat.
The revolving motion of the chamber A is produced by a cog-Wheel which gears in the toothed m'm c of said chamber. Said cog-wheel is mounted on a shaft, o, which has its bearing in a standard, p, rising from the plate which forms the seat B. When the ports l m are opposite the holes e g, the upper part of the chamber tills with steam, and a portion of the .water in the chamber runs down in the boiler, and this operation continues until the water in the boiler rises To keep the bottom, a, ofthe revolving chamber A close and steam-tight against the seat B, and prevent' the weight of steam from pressing said bottom of the chamber from said seat, and thus permitting the escape of steam, we have provided the case Q, which sets over said revolving chamber A, and is screwed fast to the seat B by screw-bolts q q q q, tre-pin al to pass through a packing-box at the outer end of said case Q. p is a small steam-pipe leading from pipel h into the interior of case Q, whereby to introduce steam into said case, which, by its pressure against the top of the revolving chamber A, counter acts the pressure of the steam at the bottom of said revolving chamber; and whilst the steam introduced by the pipe It through the opening c, has a great tendency to part the bottom of said revolving chamber A from close contact with said seat B, and permit the escape of steam between the two faces aforesaid, our
device of the case Q, and filling the. same with steam by means of the pipe jp', has an equal tendency to keep said two faces together, and prevent the escape of steam.
O' is a cock by which steam, and Water of condensed steam, may be drawn out of said case when desired.
fr is a set-screw by which the pressure of the bottom of said revolving chamber A against said seat B may be slackened should there be too heavy a pressure.
S is a spiral spring coiled around the centre-pin d, and pressed between the top of said revolving chamber A and the intelior end of said case Q, serving tov keep the bottom of said revolving chamber against said seat when no steam is in said case 5 otherwise said two faces might part and permit the steam from pipe p', on its introduction into said case Q, to press against the bottom as Well as the top of said revolving chamber A, and prevent its operation.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv
The combination of the case A, having ports Z m, and with the seat B provided with holes d c f y, substantially as herein described.
