PATENT OFFICE. I
HERBERT N. NORTHROP, OF WEST SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO FRANKLIN P. SHUMWAY COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS. j
PLAoKET-HOLDER. i
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,460, dated February 14, 1905.
Application led October 1, 1902. Serial No. 125,571.
ment in Placket-Holders, of which the follow-v ing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like numerals on thedrawings representinglike parts.
This invention j relates to placket-holders, and has for itsobject to provide a novel form of device of this class which is easily fastened or unfastened and which securely holds the placket together.
The device-comprises two members, shown in the form of plates, one of which is fastened to the underlying edge of the placket and the 'other of which is secured to the inside of the overlapping portion of the skirt, as usual in this class` of devices. One of the members is providedwith a slot or opening, and the other is provided with a headed projection which is constructed to be inserted through the opening, and the projection and slot or opening are so constructed that a turning movement of onememberrelativetotheothermemberserves to bring the head of the projection across the slot, whereby the two members are locked together.
My invention consists in constructing the more fully hereinafter pointed out in the claim, whereby they are held against any sliding movement relative to each other.
In the drawings,Figure l shows a part of the dress-skirt with my novel placket-holder in position thereon, the placket' being partially opened to better show the construction. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section through one form of the placket-holder when the same is fastened, the skirt being shown by dotted lines. Fig. 3 shows the two parts of the placket-holder shown in Fig. 2, enlarged and separated.
My improved placket-holder comprises two members 3 and 4, which are preferably made in the shape of fiat platesv and are each provided with some suitable means for securing them to the skirt 5. As shown in Fig. 3, the two members of the placket are provided with apertures 6, by means of which they may be sewed Vto the skirt. One of the members,
preferably the member 3, which is securedto the underlying fedge of the skirt, is slotted, as at 9, and the other member, 4f, which is se- .cured to the overlapping portion of the skirt,
has a headed projection extending therefrom, the head of which is constructed to be inserted through the .slot 9 and by a relative turning movement of the two members to engage the back side of the slotted member, as seen in Fig. 2. The two members are secured to the skirt in such position relative to each other that when they are fastened together the head of the projection extends across the'slot 9, thereby preventing the parts from being disengaged. It is therefore necessary when fastening the two parts together to turn one of them relative to the other until the head is in alinement with the slot, when it may be inserted through the slot. Thereafter the parts are turned to their normal position, with the head lying across the slot. With this construction the shank of the projection, or that portion which connects the head to the body or plate, lies in the slot when the two members are fastened together, and if the said shank were of the same size as the slot the said shank could slide back and forth in the slot, and thus permit a sliding movement of the two members of the device relative to each other. Obviously this would not keep the placket closed and prevent such sliding movement of the two members. I have made the shank of the projection larger and thicker than the slot and have provided the slotI with an enlarged portion to receive thesa'id shank. In this form of. my invention the projection is made by punching out of the plate 4 a portion of the proper shape to 'form the shank 10 and head 11 and bending the said punchedout portion at right angles to the plate. In this form of my invention the shank l0 is wider than the slot 9, as seen in Fig. 2, and when the two members are fastened together said shank is received in the enlarged rportion 12 of the slot, and thus prevents any sliding of one member on the other.
It will be obvious that the device herein described may be used whenever it is desired to secure together edges of a garment or any two pieces of material, and my invention contemplates the use of the device not only as a placket-holder, but as a means to secure together any two pieces of material.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A placket-holder comprising two flat plates each having means to secure it to a garment, one of said plates having a headed projection integral therewith and formed by stamping or punching a portion out of said plate and bending such punched-out portion at right angles to the plate, said projection having its shank thicker than its head, and the other of said members having a slot to receive the head, the central portion of the slot being enlarged suciently to allow the shank to turn therein, whereby when the head stands across the slot the two plates are prevented from sliding one on the other.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
