UNITED STATES Patented January 12, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
DIFFERENTIAL WINE-SHELF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,291, dated January 12, 1904.
Application filed May 9, 1903. Serial No. 156,496. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JOHN TYLER HICKS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Differential Wine-Shelves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a novel and useful shelf for carrying bottles in sideboards, pantries, refrigerators, ice-boXes,wine-cellars, and the like, the object being to enable bottles of diiferent sizes and shapes to be rmly supported; and the invention consists in a shelf or surface having differential seats susceptible of receiving bottles of different kinds and in numerous details and peculiarities thereof, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a front view of a cupboard provided with my improved wine-shelf. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the shelf.
Like numerals of reference denote like parts in both figures of the drawings.
1 denotes a shelf-case, cupboard, sideboard, or the like provided with shelves 2; but it will be understood that this improved shelf may be utilized in connection with any kind of acase or support.
The shelf 2 is intended` to hold bottles ofy 6 denotes a champagne-bottle; 7 a' gingerale bottle; 8, a bottle of another shape, and 9 a bottle of still different form. The diameter of the body of bottle 9 is such that the bottom is readily accommodated in the seat 4, and the diameter of the body of bottle 8 is so large that it requires a larger seat 5. The champagnebottles 6 may be reversed and have their necks inserted-in the openings 5. The ginger-ale bottle 7, having round ends, may also be supported in, the openings 5. Thus it will be seen that the shelf 2 is provided with a series of orifices or round holes 5, around which is arranged a series of seats or shoulders 3 and 4,' like a'pair of steps, being circular and concentric with each other and with the hole 5, it being evident that there may be any desired number of these seats to accommodate differently-sized bottles. I
With this shelf the bottles will always be symmetrically disposed, and hence will invariably present to the eye a neat appearance. Also one can tell at a glance the number of bottles on the shelf or in the case, for each shelf will hold only so many.
Many changes and variations in the precise form of the invention may be made without departing therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A shelf for bottles, the same having a differential step-like seat for the bottles.
2. A shelf for bottles having concentric seats arranged in a series of steps around an opening for bottles of different sizes.
3. A shelf having an opening provided with a` plurality of concentric shoulders forming seats.
4c. A shelf having a plurality of openings each surrounded with concentric seats of different diameters and arranged in a step-like manner.
Signed atBoston, Massachusetts, this 2d day of May, 1903.
