TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, AUGUST HUMANN, of New York, in-the county and State of New York, have invented anew andimproved Button-Hole Shears; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to' the'acgompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.

v Similar letters of rei'erence'indicate corresponding parts. I I I I Thisinvcntion relates to 'a. new device for cutting button-l10les,and consists in the use of shears having adjustable sliding cutters, the said cutters being so arranged that their edges cannot strike against ehch other.

Buttonhole cutters have been heretofore generally made with one cutter, working upon a brass or other bed. Such machines could not be used for all purposes, as they would not out very sharply through very thin. fabric. The cutters were also 'quiclcly used up on themetallic bed. My invention is designed to overcome these difiiciilties, as the cutters will have to go through even the very finest fabric, and as their edges will never be-forced against a metal or otherbed, but only through the fabric. j

A andB are the handles of ordinary shears, connected by a. pivotpin, a, as shown. (5' and D are the shanks, operated by and connected with the handles A and 'B, respectively, as is clearly shown in fig. 1.-- The shank .0 is slotted, as shown; and into the oblong slot is fitted a, stud or projectiom b, of a plate, E, ,a-tl1umbscrew, c,'securing the'said plate to the shank- G inany desired position. The inner edge of the plate E, that is, that edge which is nearest the arm D, is bevelled and sharpened, as shown. The arm or shank D is made so thin that a plate, F, secured to its'upper surface, will fit just under the cutter E, as is. clearly shown in fig. 2. This plate F is also provided with a cutting-edge, as shown. It is slotted, andsecur'ed to the arm by means of screws, d d, 'so as to he laterally adjustable onthe shank D. t

When these shears are used, and when made so that the cutters will work close, their edges might'easily come against each other, whereby they would be injured and made dull. This would occur especially when the pin a shouldlhave become a little loose by wear. To avcidgthe inconvenience of bringing the cutting-edges against each other, the cutter Fisprovided with a small tooth, e, projecting from its cutting-edge and bevelled in such a. manner that its end will be considerably distant from the opposite cutter, E, its face gradually reaching to the face of the cutter F, to which it is attached. It will be easily understoodthat, by means of this tooth,

the edges of the cutters will be guided so as not to strike each other.

The cutter E is longitudinally adjustable, to vary the'length of the button-hole. The cutter F is laterally adjustahle, to allow its being moved towards the-other cutter when the edges should have been ground. 01?. v

The tooth c, is pointed, so that it will easily fitthrongh the cloth.- It can also be conveniently used to indircate the beginning of the hole, as it can he setwith accuracy upon any one desired point.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The blade F, having a tooth, e, formed at the rear .end of its cutting-edge, when said plate 'is laterally adjustable/in combination with the blade E, providedwlth a stu'd,-b, working in a. slot in the shank Cfand secured in position by the thumb-screws, all constructed, arranged, and operating as and for thepurpose herein specified.
