VERNON C. TASKER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN ORDNANCE COMPANY, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, A COR- PORATION OF VIRGINIA.
AUXILIARY BARREL FOR BREE CH-LOADING GUNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,079, dated October 13, 1903.
Application filed February 21,1903. Serial No. 144,435. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, VERNON O. TASKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented 5 certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Barrels for Breech-Loading Guns; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to auxiliary barrels for breech-loading guns, or, as they are usually termed, subcaliber devices, and it consists in the construction hereinafter pointed r out.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l represents in section and side elevation a portion of a gun and the device within the gun; Fig. 1, an enlarged detail, partly in section and partly in elevation, of the rear adapter and auxiliary barrel applied to a gun; Fig 1 an enlarged section of the breech-hoop, showing a modification; Fig. 2, an enlarged section of the breech-hoop; Figs. 3 and 4, end and sectional views of the adapter-ring; Fig. 5, the
adapter-screw; Figs. 6, 7, and 8, end, sectional, and partial detail of theadaptersleeve.
In the drawings the letter A indicates the 0 auxiliary barrel or subcaliber-gun,which may be built up in the usual way, consisting of the tube a, the jacket a, and the breech-hoop B. This barrel A is provided on its exterior surface with two sets of screw-threads a a 5 of the same pitch and direction, one set, a being near the muzzle of and the other set, a being about the middle a of the subcalibergun. Engaging the front threads a is a front adapter C, which fits on its outer rim 0 the bore of the large or main gun. Engaging the threads a is the middle adapter D, on its outer rim d fitting the bore of the large gun, preferably where the taper of the bore stops. The rear end of the tube a has the usual 5 breech-hoop B, upon which is placed a steel ring E. This ring is provided with a number of threaded holes c and at one side with a screw-seat c. This screw-seat e runs obliquely from one face e of the ring outwardly to the outer periphery of the ring and has a threaded portion e at the face 6 and a smooth portion 6 At the inner and upper end 6 of the smooth portion e of the seat 6 there is a slit or opening a in the outer periphery of the ring E. Upon this ring E is placed a brass sleeve F, held thereto by pins f, engaging the holes 6, and having a tonguef, formed by making slits f in the sleeve, such tongue coming over the slit or opening a in the ring E. Seated in the seat 6 of the ring E is a screw G, having the threads g, which engage the threads e of the seat 6, and a smooth portion g, which is within the smooth portion (2 of this seat, the point 9 of the screw passing through the slit or opening c and pressing against the tongue f of the sleeve F.
The subcaliber-gun with the several adapters are put in position as shown in Fig. 1. After they are duly placed and adjusted by turning the barrel within the adapters the screw G is turned inwardly, forcing the point g thereof through the slit or opening 6 against the tongue f of the sleeve F and binding the tongue against the inner face or bore of the large or. main gun, thus firmly holding the subcaliber-gun in place.
In Fig. 1 is shown a modification. The ring E is dispensed with, and the oblique seat is made in the breech-hoop, the screw passing through the breech-hoop and the brass sleeve being secured thereon without the intervention of the ring E.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The adapter for a subcaliber-gun, consisting of a main portion having an oblique screw-seat provided with an opening at the edge of such main portion, a screw in said seat, the inner end of the screw being at such opening, and a sleeve-outside of the main portion having a flexible part where the end of the screw comes to the opening. 1 2. The combination of the ring, E, having the oblique screw-seat, c, and the opening, a; the screw, G, fitting in such screw-seat and having its end, g at the opening, e; and the sleeve, F, having the tongue, f, located at the opening, e
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VERNON C. TASKER.
Witnesses:
G. T. SAMPSON, GEO. T. PARKER.
