Description
UNITED STATES Patented October 6, 1903.
CHARLES W. BEEHLER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BOX-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part cf Letters Patent No. 740,732, dated October 6, 1903. Application led July 1, 1903. Serial No. 163.850. (No model.)
.To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES W. BEEHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State @of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Iin BX Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a box-fastener of the character shown' in Letters Patent of the United States issued to me March 2 7, 1893, No. 493,057.-
The object of the present improvement is to produce a fastener in which the spring that controls the fastener-hook is carried by said hook and has loose engagement with a staple in which the hook operates, so that the hook will be securely heldin engagement with the lid-plate of the fastener.
The invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure I is a top or plan view of part of a box with my improved fastener shown applied thereto. Fig. II is a longitudinal section taken on line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III is a vertical transverse section taken on line III III, Fig. II. Fig. IV is a perspective view of the lower end of the fastener-hook.
A designates part of the front wall of a box, and B part of a box-lid, to which my fastener is shown applied- In the lid is an aperture C, extending therethrough at the location of the fastener.
l designates a lid-plate securedltothe boxy lid by any suitable means and containing an aperture 2, that registers with the lid-aper- .ture C.
8 designates ahook mounted Within the bo and swingingly secured to the front wall A by a pivot pin or bolt d. The upper free end of this hook is adapted to pass through the apertures in the box-lid and lid-plate to engage said plate, as shown, and in said upper end is ahole 5 to receive a seal-wire, that also passes through a hole in a lug `G, surmounting the lid-plate l.
7 is a staple driven into the front box-wall at its inner side and inclosing the hook 3, that is adapted to swing therein in its movement through the lid and lid-plate apertures in placing the hook into engagement or out of engagement with the lid-plate.
8 designates a spring the free end of-which extends upwardly within the staple '7 lto bear against the side leg thereof opposite the rear edge ofthe hook 3. The lower end of this spring is fixed to the hook 3 in the following manner: In said hook is a slot 9, (see Fig. IV,) that receives the spring, and projecting from the inner side of the hook are lugs l0, that are placed adjacent to said slot at opposite sides thereof. The lower end of the spring 8 is seated in the slot 9, and the tongue 11, which serves as the outer wall of said slot, is then driven inwardly to clamp the spring in said slot between its two Walls. The lugs are then bent over the spring, as seen in Fig. II, from their opposite sides of the slot 9, thereby/fastening the spring in said slot, so that it will be firmly secured from dislodgment therefrom.
a spring having one of its ends positioned in the slot in said hook and having its opposite end free to impinge a bearing, andV lugs carried by said hook at opposite sides of said slot adapted to be bent across said slot and the spring therein to confine said spring, substantially as set forth. p
. CHARLES W. BEEHLER. In presence of- E. S. KNIGHT, N. V. ALEXANDER.
