COMBINED LETTER-SHEET AND RETURN-SHEET.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 730,933, dated. June 16, 1903.
Application filed April 8, 190?.-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT RICHARD LAW- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at 24 Woodbine street, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined LettenSheet and Return-Sheefqof which the following is a specification. Y
The object of this invention is to provide a combined letter mailing-sheet and envelop and a return letter-sheet and envelop, the whole being so adapted when folded up and sealed as to form an envelop which isused by the sender and by the receiver as well, the uses being of great importancewith shippers and others who are engaged in sending out goods or samples to their trade or for any other purpose where prompt replies are desirable.
It comprises a rectangular sheet of paper, which is provided along the sides with wings, two being on each side and having also a sealing-wing along one end.
It is designed in using this combined envelop and return-sheet to fold in the side wings of the return-sheet and in that condition to fold over the return-letter so that it will be embraced by the side wings of the sending-sheet and envelop and sealed, so that when the receiver opens the same the lettersheet will be intact and in such a condition that the return-sheet can be detached along the perforated line and the reply written thereon and scaled up to be returned to the original sender. In both cases the letters will be perfectly sealed,-so as to prevent examination of the contents, all of which will now be set forth in detail. 4
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View of the blank, showing the inscriptions on the inner side of the sheet; Fig. 2, aview of the blank with the return-sheet wings folded and partly turned up in the act of sealing; Fig. 3, a view of theenvelop and letter-sheet sealed, showing the reverse side; Fig. 4, a view of the blank, showing inscriptions on the outer side of the sheet. Fig. 5 shows the return-sheet sealed and ready for transmission. Fig. 6 shows front side of the return-sheet folded in the shape of an envelop; Fig. 7-, a View of blank Serial No. iomss. (No model.)
form, showing the return-sheet provided with end sealing-flap; and Fig. 8, a perspective view showing same partially folded.
In constructing my invention to adapt it 'for the purposes set forth I provide a rectangular sheet of paper which has on one side a pair of wings 8 and on the other side two wings 9 10, the latter of which has its corners cut away, as shown at 11, the object of which will be hereinafter set forth. the wings 8 8 are provided with gum on their inner surface, as shown at 12, and one end of the main rectangular body 7 has its sealing-flap 13 provided with gum on its inner surface, as at 14. It will be observed that the blank has midway a cross perforated line 15, so that the two parts may be separated, one part, 16, of which constitutes the main letter-sheet and the other part, 17, the lettersheet designed for the return document.
In the Fig. 2 I show the manner in which the wings 8 10 are first folded in preparatory to turning over the part 17 into the part 16, when the wings 8 9 are folded down and sealed at 12 and the flap 13 sealed down over the rear end, as shown at Fig. 3. When the individual or firm to whom the letter is addressed opens the envelop along the indicated side, as at 18, Fig. 4, the return-sheet The edges of' 17 is unfolded and torn off at the perforated line 15, which is then in condition to receive the return answer and sealed, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and returned to the sender, and
in order that the reply portion shall be securely sealed the wing 10 has its corners cut away, as described at 11, so that the gummed portion of the wing 8 will not only seal down the wing 10, but also overlap at the cut-away corners and seal up the ends and prevent the flaps from being raised up to disclose the writing on the inner side.
I may provide the return-sheet 17 with a narrow sealing-flap at each end, as shown at 18, Figs. 7 and 8, in which case the wing 10 is made with squared corners, so that these flaps will serve to inclose the ends of the envelop form, as will be readily understood.
What I claim as new is -1. A letter-sheet comprising a rectangular blank having on one side a pair of wings provided with gum, and on the other side a pair of wings, one wing having its corners cut away, one end of the blank having a. sealingliap and a cross perforated line midway between the ends of the blank, as herein set forth.
2. A combined letter-sheet and envelop, comprising a rectangular blank, having-a sealing-wing on one side, a rectangular folding wing on the other side, and a sealing-flap at one end, a return letter-sheet secured to said blank at end opposite to the sealing-flap, said return letter-sheet having on one sid e a sealing-wing, and on the other side a wing with its corners cut away whereby the seal-1 ing-wing can be gummed down to the sheet at the cut-away portions, as set forth. I
3. As a new article of manufacture, a combined sending letter-sheet and envelop com prising a main rectangular body, with a sealing-wing on one side, a rectangular folding wing on the other side, and a narrow sealingflap on one end, in combination with a rectangular blank attached to the other end of the main body,-havi-nga sealing-wing on one side and a folding wing on the other side with cutaway corners'; and a-line of perforations between said blanks, substantially as set forth. Signed at New York,in the county of New Xork and State of New York, this 5th day of April, A. D. 1902.
