SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent N 0. 718,721, dated Jaiiuary' 20, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY NELSON,a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to toys; and it has for its object to provide an improved toy which will possess points of advantage with respect to novelty and attractiveness and which will serve the purposes of an amusement device in an efficient manner.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved toy. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view of the same. I 1

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates my improved toy, which embodies a boX -like structure 2, formed to represent a poultryhouse and provided at one side with a door or opening 3. Within the box-like structure 2 is arranged a turn-table 4, which is mounted to revolve in a horizontal plane spaced slightly above the bottom 5 of the box-like structure 2, and upon the turn-table 4 are arranged a plurality of figures 6, which in the preferred embodiment of my invention are formed to simulate fowls 7and a man or men 8. The several figures 6 are arranged in an annular series upon the turn-table 4, and the figures of the men and fowls are alternately arranged and face in the same direction, whereby upon rotation of the turn-table the said figures are caused to appear successively at the door or opening 3, the movement of the figures representing the chasing of the fowls by the men. The same figures successively appear at the door or opening, and a continued revolution of the turn table causes the continuous presentation of the figures at the door or opening in the simulation of an endless chase within the poultry-house.

9 designates sound producing devices which are arranged within the box-like structure 2 and with which several of the figures 6 coact to produce sounds or musical tones at predetermined points or phases of the rotation of the turn-table.

The character of the sound-producing devices 9 is caused to represent the cackling or cries of the fowls 7 as near as is possible or feasible, and the relative arrangement of the figures upon the turn-table is such that the sounds produced are emitted by the soundproducing devices simultaneously with the appearance of the several fowls at the door or opening 3. In the preferred form of construction the sound-producing devices 9 consist of taut wires 10, which are strung vertically between the roof or top member 11 of the box-like structure 2 and the bottom member or fioor 5 of the same. Said strings are preferably arranged at opposite sides or ends of the box-like structure 2, and the figures 8, which represent men, are provided with lateral projections 12, which extend into position for engagement with said strings 10 upon rotation of the turn-table. The lateral projections 12 may consist of short lengths of metal, which are carried by the figures8 in position to represent the arms of the same.

The turn-table 4 is fixed to a vertical shaft 13, which is journaled at its lower end in the bottom member 5 of the box-like structure 2 and at its upper end in the roof or top member of thelatter. The shaft 13 passes centrally through the turn-table Land is provided at its upper end above the roof 11 with a crank 14, whereby it may be rotated. A transverse partition 15 is arranged vertically within the box-like structure 2 and extends at its lower edge to a plane slightly above the turn-table 4. The partition 15 is arranged between the vertical shaft 13 and the door or opening 3 and is provided at each side with an opening 16, through which opening the figures 6 pass in the rotation of the turn-table.

The operation and advantages of my improved toy will be readily understood.

The tu rn-table may be readily revolved by means of the crank 14, and the figures 6 will be thereby caused to travel in a continuous circuit through the openings 16 in the partition 15 and between the said partition and the said door or opening 3, presenting the appearance of a pursuit of the fowls 7 by the man or men 8. As each of the fowls 7 comes into registration with the door or opening 3 one of the sound-producing devices 9 will be engaged by one of the lateral projections 12 ICO to produce a sound or tone which will represent the cry of the fowl which appears at the door or opening.

The entire device is simple in construction and pleasing and amusing in use and constitutes a durable and novel toy.

I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be, made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly falls within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claim.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent A toy, comprising a casing provided at one side with a small opening, a vertical crankshaft supported centrally in bearings Within the casing,a turn-table mounted on said shaft, a plurality of figures mounted on said turntable at such distances apart that only one figure is presented opposite the opening at a time, taut strings or wires disposed vertically Within the casing in position to be struck by one or more of said figures to produce sounds.
