Beit known that I, SISE'NGER LEWIS, of Tiffin, in the county of Seneca, and State of'Ohio, have Vinvented an improved Flour-Bolt; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which-` Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the improved bolt, taken in the vertical planes indicated by the course of the red line y y in g. 2. p l Figure 2 is a transverse section taken through the bolt in the vertical plane indicated by red linexain fig. 1. n

The object of this inventionV and improvement in flour-bolts is to provide for `obtaining different grades of Hour without changing the external bolting-cloth, by the application of a cloth to the interior` of the reel, part g of whih is very coarse, and part very tine, and arranging within that portion of the exteriorcloth, which is coarsest, a very ne cloth, which is applied to an adjustable frame, andy so arranged that it can be adjusted toward or from that end of the bolt in'which the our is fed, as will be hereinafter described.
Another object of my invention is to provide for shaking or jarring the ribs and cloth of` a ourbolt, so i as to facilitate the passage of the Hour through it, by means of hammers, longitudinally movable spring-rods; 1
and applied to the ribs of the bolt within the bolting-cl'oth, and adjustable cam-plate applied on the inside of the bolt-chest, as will be hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, Iwill describe its construction and operation. n
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the bolting-chest, within which is arranged, in `an inclined plane, the rotating holt. The bolting-reel or frame consists of head-pieces, B` and C, to which are secured the longitudinal bars or ribs D D, that arelconnected at suitable points to a longitudinal shaft, E, passing through the centre of the reel, by means of radial arms or braces E', as shown in figs. 1 and 2. The shaft E has its end l bearings in the ends of the chest A, and thefupper or highest end of this shaft passes through the chest and is t driven by means applied outside of the chest, in any suitable manner. The cloth a is the coarsest, and occupies about oucfourth the length of the reel, more or less, and it is suitably united to the tine cloth b, which should be suiiciently iine to make the best merchantable flour, while the coarse cloth gives what is termed custom-flour. t Within the space surrounded by the coarse cloth a, at or near the upper end of the reel, is a cloth', b', corresponding in length to this external cloth a, and, inlneness, to the clothb. This internal cloth bis stretched around short pieces, D,` which are placed in longitudinal slots in the longitudinal ribs D, and secured to airing, F,`as slewn in figs. 1 and 2. The pieces D are shorter than the slots in which they are fitted, so that they may all be movedV in a direction with the length of the reel, by means of the rod G which is attachedjto-thering F, and extended nearly to the discharging-end of this reel, as shown in fig. 1.
By moving this internal-cloth frame toward the upper end or head of the reel, so as to` entirely cover thc external coarser cloth a, a fine bolting-cloth through the entire length of the Vbolt will be obtained, thus making a perfect merchant-bolt, and by drawing the interior cloth from the head of the reel, a coarscr grade of flour will be obtained. By adjusting this internal cloth so as to `allow more or less of the our to passovor and n through the external cloth a, any desired grade of ilour may be obtained.
Upon two of the longitudinal ribs D of the reel, inside of the external bolting-cloth, I have applied hamj` mers or knockers, for striking upon the ribs as the `reel is revolved, and thus jarring this reel, and causing `the flour to pass more freely through the boltngcloth or cloths. As both hammers are constructed and operated alike, I will describe but one of them, together with the mode of actuating them.
The hammer g is secured toa shortshaft, having its bearings in a standard, y, and having a crank, h, at @one end. This crank h enters an oblong slot, which is made through an arm, 71.", secured upon a longitudinal 4sliding rod, J, so that, by moving this rod eudwise,'the hammer can Vbe vibrated and caused to strike the rib -to 4which it is pivoted. The rod J passes through eye-bearings 1.' z' fastened to the rib of the reel,an`d-carries on its `'outer end a small anti-friction roller, shown in figs. 1 and 3. For the purpose of forcing back the rods J J, and then suddenly releasing them, I employ a segmental camplate, S, which is secured at one end to the end of the chest A', inside thereof,and supported in position by means of a. screwgp, which is secured into the chest A, and provided with a circular turning-nut or head,`r, upon it.
This cam-plate is'thus applied to the chest for the purpose of allowing a person tra-regulate the force ofthe blows of the hammers, or to stop the action ot' these hammers altogether. To'effect this a cord, N, (see figs. 1
and 2,) passes overthe grooved head T of the screw 71, and down through the bottom ofthe bolt-chest. By means of this cord the screw p can be turned, 'eitherl to the right or left, and the lower end of the cam-plate set furtherY from or nearer to the end ot' the chest to which this plate issccured. The anti-friction wheels j, on theouter ends of the hammer-rodspJ, are alternately brought in contact with the surface of the cam-plate S, as the reel Ais rotated, and the hammers are caused to strike with greater or less force, according to the length of movement given to the hammer-rods by said cam-plate, which' can be adjusted as described.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A bolting-cloth applied to a sliding frame, and arranged within a bolting-reeL-whieh is covered with bolting-cloth of di'rent degrees of fineness, for producing dierent gradesof Hour at pleasure, substantially as described. y l
2. The hammers g, secured to crank-shafts, the cranked ends of which play in slotted arms h. upon longitudinally sliding spring-rodsJ, in combination with an adjustable cam-plate,.S, upon the inside of the bolting-chest, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described.
3. The adjustable screw-pulley r applied upon a stud, p, and provided with cord N, for adjusting` the eam S. LEWIS.
