Description

@uitrit tetrs etnt @frn JOHNNY. BAKER, OF PARKERSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA.
Letters Patent N'o. 69,155, dated September Q4, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN HYDRANTS.
iti/lie Stintino nfctnt tu in tlgrsc tcttcts aitnit :nit mating pint nf tige Sinin.
TO ALL WIIOM I'I MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. BAKER, oi' Parkersburg, in the county ot' Wood, and State of West Virginia,` have invented a certain new and uset'ul Improvement in Hydrnnts; of which improvement the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, which makes part of this speciiieation, and which represents a vertical longitudinal section through a. hydrant embodyingl my seid improvement.
It is the object of my invention to obviate the difiiculties and inconveniences occasioned by the freezing and bursting of the supply pipes of hydrants; and to this end my invention consists in shutting oil` the water directly at the lnain, and draining the hydrant pipe so that it is emptied, and remains empty, until the water is again turned on from the main.
The service pipe I3 is tapped into the main in the usual manner, and so that it may slightly incline upwards from the inain to the elbow-joint, and is supported in a. proper casing for its necessary protection. As near the main. as practicable I tit into the supply pipe a. two-way cock, A, upon the head of which is a link, C, attached to a link-rod, D, and connected with a hand-lever, E, passingl up through the casing F, and working back and forth through aV slot in the top of the easing.
The drawing shows in black lines the position of the parts when the valve is closed, and the red lines their position when it is open. W'hen the water is turned on, the waste-way t' is closed, and no water escapes through it; but when the water is shut 0H' at the innin the waste-way 1' in the cock A leads from the pipe B into the waste-way I, and the water is thus drained from the hydrant, and escapes into the earth, this draining being facilitated by the inclination ot` the pipe towards the mein.
By this means any freezing in the pipe is eifectnally prevented.
What I claini herein as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement, :is described, of the shutoff cock and waste-way immediately at the main, for the purpose set forth.
2. rIhe combination, substantially as described, of the shut-oit1 cock and waste-way et the main with the hand-lever and oonncctingrod, for the purpose set forth.
The combination with the inclined supply pipe ot' the shut-oit` cock and waste-ways z' I, immediately at the main, for the purpose set fort-h.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
y JOHN W. BAKER. Witnesses:
WALTER S. SANDS, PniLir L. WiLsoN.
