UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARDIN HATCH, OF DES MOINES, IOlVA.
DESK FOR HOTEL-REGISTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters lPatent No. 675,443, dated June 4%, 1901.
Application filed October 5, 1900. Serial No. 82,124. (No model.)
To (all whont it may concern:
Be it known that l, HARDIN HATCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Folk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Desks for HotelRegisters, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention is an improvementrelating to the advertisingdesk for hotel-registers for which Patent No. 652,225 was granted to me June 19, 1900; and it consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of a pen-rack, a receptacle for an ink-well, and a plurality of pockets for articles of stationery, with a movable skeleton metal frame, as hereinaftersetforth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top view of the skeleton frame and my improvement attached thereto as required for practical use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the dotted line a; a; in Fig. l and shows the top surface of the pen-rack practically level. Fig. 3 is a modification of Fig. 1 and shows the top surface concave. Fig. 4 shows the rear end of the pen-rack elevated and the top inclined forward and downward. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 and shows the manner of detachably fastening the attachment to the rear face of the skeleton frame as requiredfor practical use. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the invention adapted to be attached to a desk; and Fig. 7 is a sectional View of a desk, showing myimprovement applied as required for practical use.
The letter A designates the flat wooden bottom of the book-support of the desk, connected with a turn-table (that is not shown) by means of a screw Z) and washer c. A block H, that has an inclined top face adapted for placing an advertising-card thereon and the edges at its bottom rabbeted to reduce weight, is fixed on top of the rear end portion of the wooden bottom A. Blocks H and 11 that taper from end to end to produce inclined faces for the reception of advertising-cards, are fixed on top of the bottom A at its edge portions to extend from the rear portion to the front edge, as shown in Fig. 2. Bookrests J, having inclined top faces, are fixed across the top face of the bottom A, as required to support a hotel-register in an inelined position.
K and l are the parallel parts of the main portion of the three-sided skeleton frame, and L and L are mating right-angled parallel extensions from the ends of the main portion. These extensions are also composed of mating sides connected at their inner ends with the part I and at their outer ends by cross-pieces L The parallel outsides of the ends of the complete frame taper downward from the rear edge to the front cross'bars L.
At the corners of the frame are deep pockets L", adapted for placing mail-matter, &c., therein.
M and M are the parallel sides of an auxiliary frame, adapted to be fixed to the rear face of the part K of the main frame by means of screws. They are rigidly connected by an integral bottom N and inclined ends N a plurality of transverse partitions R, that divide the space between them to produce pockets of different length adaptedto retain letter-paper, envelope, and other articles. At one end portion of the auxiliary frame the partitions are provided with a plurality of concaves in their top surfaces to adapt them to serve as a pena-ack.
At the central portion of the auxiliary frame is an integral ink-well S or receptacle adapted for retaining an ink-well securely.
It is obvious that the pockets for stationery, the pen-rack, and the ink-Well cons tructed and applied to the main skeleton frame will be greatly advantageous to a hotel-clerk and guests who have access thereto.
Having thus described my invention and its purposes, the practical utility thereof will be readily understood by persons familiar with the art to which it pertains, and what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The skeleton frame consisting of two parallel sides, an integral bottom at one end portion of the parallel sides, inclined vertical ends at the parallel sides, transverse partitions integral with the parallel sides and the bottom and transverse vertical partitions integral with the parallel sides and provided with concaves in their top edges to adapt them to serve as pen-racks, as shown and de scribed for the purposes stated.
I-IARDIN HATCH.
