Description

UNITED STATES :AT'ENT GFFICE.
ENOS ll. KREIDER, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA;
HAN D-VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 670,788, dated March 26, 190i.
Application filed July 28.1899. Serial No. 725,357- (No model.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ENOS H. KREIDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Vises; and
. I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in a hand or pin vise of that class in which the grip-jaws are pivoted at approved points between side ears or plates of a head-block provided with a stem or handle on which a conical sleeve movable up and down thereon is adapted to compress or expand the forward or bite ends of said jaws.
The object of the invention is the construction of a hand or pin vise that may be operated with one hand, dispensing with the usual clamp-screw or compressing-ring, with increased pressure on the bite ends of its jaws.
The elements of the invention will severally and at large appear in the following description, and they will be separately and combinedly set forth in the claims.
The purposes of the invention are attained by the mechanism and devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, similar reference characters designating like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a plan of a hand or pin vise embodying the elements of the invention, showing the jaws in closed or bite position. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same vise with the jaws or bite open, the central portion of the top earplate removed, and the head-block in horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is an enlarged view similar to that of Fig. 3 with the near jaw removed and the right-hand end of the handle or stem broken away. Fig. 5 is a view from the right of the head-block as it appears in Fig. 4 with the jaws and sleeve removed, showing the jaw pivot-pinsin place and the stem or handle at the point 00in cross-section. Fig. 6 is a plan of the jaw removed from Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal central vertical section of the sleeve detached from Fig. 4, showing the guide-pin in full lines in place. Figs. 8 and 9 are respectively left and right hand end views of said detached sleeve, and Figs. 10 and 11 are views showing the head made from sheet metal.
The head A is preferably an integral body of approved size and shape, consisting of a central head-block a, with top and bottom plates a, forming side ears a provided with orifices a into which are secured, as by riveting, the extremities of pivot-pins A.
Between the ears a on the sides of the head A are placed the bodies of jaws Band pivoted in place by the pins A, passing through orifices b in said bodies, said jaws having forward of said pivot-points inwardly-curving arms I), with widened contact-faces 17 which may be roughened by approved filecuts to increase their grip or bite, and they may be provided with registering V cuts or grooves 19 of approved depths for the better holdiugof the Wireorpin, and rearward of said pivot-points rearwardly narrower and longer arms 19 so that an outwardly-exerted pressure against the rear ends of the latter will bring the forward ends of the former together with increased force, and said rear ends on their inner faces may be provided with rounded ridges or ribs b to receive the impact of said outward pressure with reduced friction, while coiled springs b engaging in sockets in the forward inner faces of the forward ends of the jaws and against the adjacent faces of the central head-block a, serve to press said forward ends outwardly and the rearward ends of said jaws inwardly.
Into the rearward face of the block at is rigidly secured, in any improved manner, the forward end of a handle or stem 0 of approved dimensions, and which handle maybe cylindrical in form, as shown, orit mayhave any other shape in cross-section, having a forward end smooth portion 0 and a rearward end knurled portion 0, with a rounded extremity c to rest in the hollow of the hand when the vise is applied to use,and the smooth portion 0 for a prescribed distance fromits forward end rearward is provided in one side thereof with a longitudinal groove or recess ciconstitu ting a guideway for the end of a pin yet to be described, said handle or stem being provided with an axial bore or aperture 0 through its body for the passage of a wire therethrough when so desired.
Onto the-smooth portion a of the handle or stem 0 is mounted a truncated sleeve D, movable up and down thereon between the arms 1 b of the jaws B, with its wider end toward the upper or attached end of said handle or stem, its convex surface engaging against the rounded ridges or ribs b of said arms, wherebyadownward motion of the sleeve will expand the rearward ends of the jaws and compress their forward ends, forming the desired bite or grip upon the article to be held in place or secured to the vise. The forward v end of the sleeve is cut away above and below to form end projections or fingers d to enter the space or opening between the plates a, allowing the sleeve to pass up fully against the head-block and the jaws toopen fully at the bite or grip ends, and the sleeve, adjacent to the upper cut-out, is provided with a push or pull block (1, whereby to move it up and 1 down, as may be desired, while a pin d passing through the block and sleeve, with its point engaging in the groove 0 and abutting against its lower end practically at the point as, serves to secure said blocks in place, guide the sleeve in its upward and downward course, preventing it from turning and stopping its further downward progress.
Instead of being made as hereinbefore shown and described the head may be punched from suitable sheet metal, as shown in Fig. 10, comprising the rectangular por-I tion 0, having thecentral orifice 0, joining the end portions 0 and the side extensions 0 I having the orifices o with the side extensions j folded over, as shown in Fig. 11, said central portion through its orifice 0 being secured to the forward end of the handle or stem, tak-; ing the place of the head-block a, before mentioned, and the folded-over portions 0 taking the places of the top and bottom plates a, also before mentioned, with the side extensions 0 taking the places of the jawglivoting ears a likewise before mentioned, without changing the character of the'invention.
Now, the several parts hereinbefore described and occupying the respective posi-. tions illustrated in the drawings, the following observations will be noted: first, that the rounded lower end being placed in the hollow of a hand, with the head resting against the fingers thereof, the block d may be readilyi engaged by the thumb of the same hand and the sleeve D moved up or down on the steni 0, thereby constituting a one-hand operative tool; second, moving the sleeve 1) from the position illustrated in Fig. 2 to that illustrated in Fig. 1 will compres the forward or bite ends of the jaws; third, that the sleeve being long and gradually sloping said compression will be gradual and easy; fourth, that the arms 5 being about twice the length of the arms b the bite ends of the jaws will be brought together with a greatly-increased force, and, fifth, that for these several reasons the hand-viseof the invention is simple in construction and yet a very effective tool.
Having now described the invention and ascertained and fully set forth the manner in which it is performed, what is considered new,
and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, 1s
I 1.. A hand-vise comprising a head-block having top and bottom plates with side ears as shown, a handle with one end rigidly secured into said block and jaws pivoted between said ears, said jaws having forwardly inwardly curving arms with contact-faces at the forward extremities thereof, and rearwardly longer arms with adjacent frictionribs at their rearward ends, and a truncated sleeve movable up and down on said handle between said rearward ends with means provided to prevent its turning, substantially as described and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. A handvise comprising a head-block with side ears and a stem having one end rigidly secured into said block, a pair of jaws pivoted between said ears and lying in the ;plane of said stem, said jaws having'forwardly inwardly curving arms with grip-faces at their forward ends and rearWardly-extended arms,'one on each s'ideof the stem, with their extremities adapted to receive the impact of an outward pressure, and a truncated sleeve mounted on said stem, movable up and down thereon, with means provided to prevent its turn'ing, and contacting with said extremities, whereby the downward motion, in one direction, of said sleeve will impart said outward ipressure, substantially'as described and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth. I In testimony whereof I affix my signature "in presence of two witnesses.
