STIRRUP OR HANGER FOR FLOOR-BEAMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 666,918, dated January 29, 1901.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. BUTZ, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg,
in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups or Hangers for Floor-Beams, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in stirrups or hangers for floor-beams and blanks therefor; and the invention consists in so cutting or shearing a piece of sheet-steel as to produce a blank which by the subsequent bending or folding of certain parts is transformed into a light but strong hanger or stirrup.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of my improved blank. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a partially.- folded blank. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a completed hanger or stirrup. Figs. 4 and 5 are views similar to Figs. 2 and 3, illustrating a modiication. Fig. 6 is a View, partly in elevation and partly in section, of the stirrup or hanger shoWn in Fig. 3, the plane of section being indicated by the line VI VI, Fig. 7. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the same on a plane indicated by the line VII VII, Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a plan view illustrating the manner of cutting the blanks from a continuous strip of metal of a Width equal to or greater than the length of the blank. Fig. 9 is a plan view illustrating the manner of cutting blanks from continuons strips of a Width equal to or greater than the Width of the blank; and Fig. 10 is a View similar to Fig. 9, showing the manner of cutting the blank for the form of stirrup shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
In the practice of my invention the blank is made of a width equal or approximately equal to the combined Widths of the body or k Wall of the stirrup and of the side Wings of. At one end the blank is provided tongues 2 and 3 in line with the portion ed to form the back Wall of the stirand Vrith one of the portions 4 adapted m one of the side walls of the stirrup, .ngue 2 being made of a Width approxiy equal to the portion 1, which forms 1900. Serial No. 16,960. (No model.)
the depth of foot or supporting-piece desired in the finished stirrup. lThe tongue 3 is made of a length sufficiently greater than the width of the back plate to permit of its end being turned up outside of the other side Wall of the stirrup. These tongues are separated by a cut on the line a ofthe bend made in the blank to form the sides of the stirrup. As it is not necessary nor desirable that the sides 4a of the stirrup should be made full Width at their upper ends, diagonal'cnts b are made in the portions 4 of the blank, said cuts extending from the edges of the blank to the junctions of the lines to fold ct and the line of fold c at the upper end of the portion l of the blank.
In forming the stirrup the tongue 2 is bent so as to stand at a right angle to the portion l to form foot 2a, and the portions 4 are folded on the lines a to form the side Walls 4aof the stirrup. The tongue 3 is then bent under the foot 2a and its end up around against the opposite side Wall 4a, to which it is secured by rivets. Thus it Will be seen that the foot 1a is reinforced by a piece of metal integral at one end with one of the side walls and securely fastened to the other side Wall.
To form the hook of the hanger or stirrup, the side portions 5 of the blank are folded over onto the portions 1 and 6 of the blank. The portion 6 and the folded portions 5 are next bent on the line c and also on the line d, thereby forming the hook Which engages the masonry of the Wall or the beam, which supports the floor-timbers. It is preferred when the stirrup is to be used in connection with brick orv stone Walls to bend the outer .end of one of the portions 5 up and the ends anchorage obtained by folding both portions 5 over to form part of the hook, as described, is desirable When the hook is supported by masonry, one of the portions 5 may be omitted, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, Without reducing the strength of the Astirrup at the bend beyond a safe margin of safety, and the outer IOO end of the portion 6 may also be omitted, as there is little strain on the downturned portion of the hook.
It is characteristic of my invention that the stirrup or hanger is so reinforced at points of greatest strain as to have a very large margin of safety. and it is also characteristic of the invention that the stirrup and its reinforces are so arranged and proportioned that the blank can be cut either transversely or longitudinally from a sheet or strip of metal without any loss, except perhaps the extreme inner ends of the portions 5, which it is preferred to cut oif, as the sharp points might infiict injury during the bending of the blank.
I claim herein as my invention- 1. A blank foi stirrups or hangers, consisting of a body portion and side portions, independent tongues in line with the body portion and one side portion, a hook-forming portion in line with the body portion, and a hook reinforcing portion adapted when folded onto the hook-forming portion to extend down onto the body portion, substantially as described.
2. A blank for stirrups or hangers having a width equal to the combined Width of the back and sides of the hanger, and of sufiicient length to form the body and hook of the stirrup and having at one end tongues or extensions of different lengths, the sides of the blank being cut diagonally, said cuts extending from the edges to the line on which the blank is bent to form the hook, substantially as set forth.
3. A hanger or strip consisting of a boxshaped body portion, a foot portion formed by bent tongues integral with the back and one side of the body, the side tongue extending up onto the opposite side and a hook portion integral with the back Wall of the body, and reinforced by a lateral extension of the hook folded down onto the same and extending down onto the back wall of the body, substantially as set forth.
4. Astirrup or hanger consisting of a boxshaped body portion, a foot portion formed by bent tongues integral with the back and one side of the body, the side tongue extending up onto the opposite side, and a hook portion integral with the back Wall of the body and reinforced by lateral extensions of the hook folded down onto the saine and extending down and riveted onto the back wall of the body, the outer end of one of the extensions being bent up to afford increased anchorage, substantially as set forth.
