HlTCHlNG-STRAP.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 665,032, dated January 1, 1901.
A li ti fil d February 10, 1900- Serial No. 4,794. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that we, ROBERT G. PETWAY and JOHN M. TRITSOHLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Harness Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to harness attachments, and more particularly to a fastening device adapted for use in connection with a hitching strap or rein, the object being to provide an exceedingly cheap and simple appliance by means of which straps can be quickly and easily fastened to the hitching-post and also easily unhitched therefrom, avoiding the necessity of tying and looping the strap, as usual.
With this object in view our invention consists in the peculiar construction of the various parts and in their novel combination and arrangement, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a transverse section. Fig. 5
' shows the parts in perspective and detached,
and Fig. 6 shows a slight modification.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the hitching-strap, upon which is secured a sleeve B, said sleeve having a loop 0 formed upon one face thereof, said loop being preferably made tapering, as shown. The sleeve B and loop 0 may be made of sheet or cast metal, as preferred.
A plate D is fastened upon one end of the hitching-strap, said plate being preferably constructed with an eye D in order that it may be easily attached tothe strap; but in Fig. 6 we have shown a slightly-modified construction, in which the plate B slides on the intermediate portion of the strap and the rear end of the plate is provided with a socket, in which the end of the strap is placed and riveted. The plate D is preferably hollow and tapers slightly toward the forward end, and this forward end is also beveled upon one side for a considerable distance, as most clearly shown at D The beveled end is recessed longitudinally, as shown at D and a spring-tongueE is secured in the said recess, the forward end of the tongue being secured in the forward end of the recess, the rear end of the tongue projecting some distance above the face of the plate, and the extreme end of this spring-tongue is bent, as shown at E in order to extend into the hollow portion and engage with the top of the plate to prevent the said tongue springing out of the recess D In operation the plate is forced through the loop 0, and the spring-tongue will be forced into the recess until the shoulder E passes beyond the end of the loop, when the force of the spring will throw the same out of the recess and in engagement with the loop, thereby securely fastening the end of the strap to the body thereof, and in this manner the hitching-strap is connected to the post without tying or looping. Whenever it is desired to disconnect the strap from the hitching-post, the tongue is depressed and the plate withdrawn from the loop.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a harness attachment, the combination, with a sleeve, of a loop on' one face thereof, a hollow plate adapted to project through said loop, one end of which is provided with means for securing it to the end of a strap, and a spring secured to the other end, the rear end of which projects through the top of the plate and is adapted to engage with the forward edge of theloop, substantially as described.
2. In a harness attachment, the combination, with a sleeve, of a loop on one face thereof, a hollow plate adapted to project 7 through said loop, the rear end of which is provided with a socket and the forward end is tapered and inclined and slotted longitudinally, and a spring secured to the forward end of the plate, the rear end of which projects through the slot and is bent to engage with the top of the plate and prevent the removal of the spring therefrom, substantially as described. v
