TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN RUPP, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Double-Seaming Machine; und Ido hereby declaro that the following is a full, clear, and enact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, inawhich* Figure 1 represents a side elevation of this invention. y

This invention consists in a movable slide carrying a supporting plate, in combination with a metallic disk mounted upon a`vertical shaft; in the arrangement of three or more cone-rollers in anaunular rim, in combination with a rising'and falling disk; andiu the combination of a clamping-rollcr with burring-rollers and revolving disk, as will be hereinafter more fully described. u

This-treadle connects with the slide by means of a lever and chain, or in any other suitable mannezgand it is arrangediu a convenient position for operation. On the shaft B is mounted a loose pulley, G, and a fast pulley, G', and these pulleys are in such a position that-when said shaft is down the driving-belt runs on the loose pulley, but when the shaft is up the driviug-belt passes from the loose to' the fast pulley and causes the shaft to revolve.` .Thedisk A is provided with a dovetailed groove, c, which extends diametrically through ,its centre and forms the guidefor a slide, cl, and from this slide rises a rod, e, on the topl of which is mounted al circular plate, f. The slide Ulis retained in the groove c by two latches, g, and if it is adjusted in the proper position the rod ciorms a continuation of the shaft B, The plate f screws on the rod e, and ajam-nut, .71, serves to lock it in the desired position.- The body of the kettle or other vessel tobeproivided with a bottom is placed in a reverse direction on the disk A, and the platef is adjusted so that its upper surface is on a. level with the edge of said kettle or vessel, as shown in g. 2. On the platefis placed the blank of the bottom, and this blank is kept in a. central position by three or more rollers, z', which are mounted on axlesj, that have their bearing in suitable brackets, 1:, and said blank is clamped between said plate and a. swivel-plate l, which revolves freely on the lower end of a rod, m. This rod is situated in line with the shaft B, and it slides up and down iu an arm, n, on the top of the frame D, being subjected to the actionof a Weight or spring which depresses the swivel-plate l with suiiicient force onthe blank to hold the same between the two plates and to compel it to revolve with said plates. The brackets ,7c are secured to an annular rim, H, which is secured to the frame D, and they are adjustable in a radial direction by suitable slots and screws. The' rollers z' in said brackets are provided with three or morespeeds each, like cone-pulleys, and the smallest speeds, which are at v the bottom, form the guides which bear against the edge of the blank and keep the same in a central position. The body of the vessel and the blank of the bottom, as the same are adjusted on the disk A, are in the form shown in iig. 5. When the disk A is raised by depressing theftreadle F, the edge of the blank bears against the shoulders above the lowest speeds of the cone-rollers t', and its edge is turned down to the position shown in fig. 6. At this stage of the process the burring-roller o and the 'clamping-rollerp are brought into action, and thereby the edge of the bottom is brought in the form shown in iig. 2. Said two rollers are mounted in u common carriage, q, which slides back and forth in a radial guide-way in the annular rim H. The clamping rollerp is secured to the inner end of a. lever, r, which has its fulcr'um on a pivot, s, and to which a tilting motion can be imparted by a cam, t,- and crank, u. The burringroller o is secured to the inner end of an arbor, which has its bearing in tbedower part of the carriage, and a lever, 1', serves to more said carriage back and forth in the radial-guidejway. By the action of the burring-roller the edge of the bottom is turned as shown in ig. 2, and by the clamping-roller it is drmly pressed up against the rim of the body of the vessel. After this has been accomplished the treadle is still further depressed, and by the action ofthe second shoulders of the cone-rollers i the edge of the bottom, together with the rim of the body of the vessel, isforced into the position shown in g. 7, and and a doubleseam is nished bythe action of the largest speeds of the concrollers. By'tliese means the bottoms can beattached to the lbodies of tin vessels with the greatest ease and facility. By the application of the movable slide, in combination with the disk A, the operation of introducing and removing the vessels is materially facilitated, and by the` use oftli'ree or more rollers actingsirnultaneously on the edges of the bottoms, said bottoms arekept in the centrqfand the operation is effected without requiring particular attention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. The movable slide d carrying the supporting plate f, in` combination with the disk Aj'eonstructed, arranged, and operating substantially as andior the purpose-described. i I
2. The arrangement of three oi' more cone-rollers 1,', in the annular rim H, in combination with the rising and falling disk A, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The clamping-roller p, in combination with the barring-roller o, 'and disk A, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
