Description

D. A. KELLOGG. WRENCH.
No. 65,679. Patented June 11, 1867.
f 1w n e m I DENNIS A. KELLOGG, 0F VALPARAISO, INDIANA.
Leim-8 Patent No. 65,619, dated June 11, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRENGHES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
De it known that I, DENNIS A. KELLOGG, of Valparaiso, in the county oi' Porter, :tuill'State of [nalin-na, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Monkey-Wrench; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clean` and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved nut-wrench.
Figure 2, an edge view.
Figures 3 and 4, details of the sliding jaw.
Figures 5 and G, sections in the line :1: z, iig. 1, in different positions of the screw-nut.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to-nn improved plan of constructing awrench for screw-taps, and consists in attaching a slotted nut to the main bar of the wrench, which bar is made narrow, with segments et' screw-tln'euds upon the edges to fit the nut. The slot in the nut is 4made by cutting eut the threads wide enough to allow the narrow edges ot' the main har to pass through them -freely. The sliding jaw has two wings or project-ions, which are segments that t on the dat wide sides ofthe inain bar, and are threaded to fit in the slotted nut. By this arrangement of the parts the slidingjaw of the wrencheun be moved to any point or. the main bar, when the slotted nut is turned so that the narrow sides of the bar shall pass through the slot in the nut, und the jaw can be held at any point on the main har by turning the nutso that its threaded part shall engage in the threads on the narrow sides of the main bar. Provision is also made for making the jaws of the wrench tight against a-nut placed 'between them, as hereinafter described.
A is the main bar; B the iixcdjuw, and C the sliding jaw. VThe main baris inode flut or narrow on two sides and wide on the other two, as shown in gs. 1 and 2.4 The narrow sides of the main bar are threaded for a certain distance from the handle D for :i milled nut, a, which has its threads eut away on opposite sides Sullieientlyto permit the nut toslide freely on the main bur when the narrow sides are in the part of the nut thus i cut away or slotted to allow oufrec passage. The sliding bar C is mortised to tit 'on the main bar and slide upon i it, and on the part toward the handle has projecting segments b Il on the flat sides, as shown in figs. 3, 4, which j f segments are threaded to tit the screw in the nut a, as seen in fig. New, when the nut a is. turned so that the slotted parts are brought over the narrow sides o`- the main bar, the sliding jaw C may be moved freely upon it, and it carries the nut a with it, and thus the jaws may be opened any required distance, or may be closed upon ascrcw-tep, as shown in iig. 1.
In order to multe the operation of opening and closing one of facilit;` and certainty by the right position of the slotted nut on the main bar, a slnull pin, c, projects on one side, which is so placed as to catch against u. shoulder on the nut a when it is turned in one direction and stop it at'thc point which brings the sides of' the maiubar in the slots in the nut, as shown 'in figs. 2-6; and in order to pinch the jaws tightly upon a nut the same pin c bears against on incline on the nut', when it is turned in the opposite direction, as shown in figs. 1 5. Thus the sliding jaw C may be moved lquickly upon the main har and adjusted instantly to u nut of any size, may be secured on the nut firmly andv may be released from it easily. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pit-tent, is-
i A. wrench constructed, arranged, and operating as and for the purpose herein set forth.
DENNIS A. KELLOGG.
