HENRY L. DE ZENG, OF GENEVA, NEW YORK.
LAM P-HOLDE'R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 654,878, dated July 31, 1900. 7
Application filed October 5, 1899.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. DE ZENG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Geneva, in the county of Ontario, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Holders, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a lamp-holder which shall be ornamental in appearance and at the same time obviate the necessity of manipulating the chimney in the operation of replenishing the lamp andshall also facilitate said replenishing and the lighting of the lamp; and to that end the invention consists in the novel construction of the lamp-holder and auxiliary devices connected therewith, as hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
The invention is fully illustrated in the aunexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved lamp-holder. Figs. 2 and 3 are elevations and partly-vertical sectional views of the lampholder with the lamp-support in different positions. Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged transverse sections, respectively, on lines X X and Y Y. Fig. 6 is a horizontal transverse section of the lamp-inclosing case in its open position, and Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail side View of the lamp-burner.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
a represents a pedestal which may be of any desirable shape and dimensions and of any suitable material. This pedestal is formed with a supplemental post a, extending from the top of the pedestal. Upon the top of this post is rigidly mounted a suitable case b for inclosing the lamp L. To the top of said case is secured in any suitable manner the chimney-holder c, which may be of any suitable shape to properly support the chimney o. lhe lamp L is placed upon a vertically-movable support d, located inside of the case b, which is provided with a door 19 over an opening of sufficient size to permit the lamp to be conveniently passed through it when Serial No, 732,660. 0 model-3 required to remove the lamp for replenishing or cleaning.
The operation of the lamp-snpport will be hereinafter described.
The post a is preferably of acylindrical shape and tubular or formed with an internal guide e, which may extend into the pedestal a, and contains a vertically-movable stem f,- which extends into the case b and has fastened to its upper end the lamp-support d. For lifting said lamp-support and locking it in its elevated position to cause the lamp to communicate directly with the usual cone g in the chimney-holder c I apply to the post a a vertically movable collar h and provide said post with a vertical slot 4 and with a lateral slot 2", extending therefrom. The col-' lar it engages a lug or pin n, projecting from the stemf, and has projecting from its inner side a lug j, which engages the slot in the post, and by sliding said collar upward the stem f is raised and the lamp L thereby elevated to carry the burner into the cone 9, and
' then by turning said collar the lug thereof entersinto the lateral slot 1', and thereby retains the collar in its raised position, and consequently the lamp is held in its connection with the base of the chimney-holder c. The lug'or pin n slides in the aforesaid vertical slot 7; during the vertical movement of the stem f, and thus prevents said stem from turning.
In order to insure proper communication of the burner with the cone g, I provide the lamp-support d with suitable gages t and t, by which to adjust the position of the lamp. Said gages serve to prevent the lamp from shifting or turning on said support, and consist of'knobs or projections provided on top of the support and which engage corresponding recesses in the bottom of the lamp, as shown in Figs, 3 and 6 of the drawings.
To obviate undue jarring of the lamp in lowering the same, the bottom of the guide 6 or interior of the post a is provided with a spiral spring 0 or other suitable cushion re ceiving the impact of the lower end of the stem f.
To obtain a close fit of the burner with the chimney-holder, I form the upper margin of thebase of the burner sloping, as shown at r in Fig. 7 of the drawings. The under side the lamp in relation to the chimney-holderas set forth. a
of the chimney holder is correspondingly shaped to'receive the aforesaid sloped portion of the burner. I
.What I claim as my invention is v l. A lamp-holder comprising a pedestal formed with an internal guide, a case mount ed rigidly on said pedestal and provided with a '-door, a verticallymovable stem in said guide and extending into said case, a lamp support fastened tothe upper end of said" stem whereby-the 'lamp'is completely housed by said case, said support being detached from the lamp, and a vertically-movable collar on the pedestal and connected to the stem to elevate and lower the lamp-support, and
provided with means to lock said support in its elevated position as set forth; 4
2. A lamp-holder consisting of a pedestal, a vertically-movable lamp-support sustained on said pedestal, means for'controlling the elevation of said support, a chimney-holder supported on the pedestal, and gages on the lamp-support for adjusting the position of the lamp in relation to the chimney-holder as set forth.
3. A lamp-holder consisting'of a pedestal, a vertically-movable lamprs'upport sustained on said pedestal, means for controlling the elevation of said support, a lamp-inclosing case mounted on said pedestal, a chimneyholder mounted on said case, and gages on the lamp-support for adjusting the position of 4. A lamp-homer consisting or a pedestal formed With a supplemental post of cylindrical shape and with a vertical guide in said post, and a vertical slot and lateral slot extending therefrom in the post, a vertically- -movable stem in the said guide, a lamp-support mounted on said stem, a vertically-movable collar onthe aforesaid post for lifting the lamp-support and provided With a lug engaged'with the aforesaid slot, a lug on the stem engaging said slot to prevent the stem from turning, and a chimney-holder supported by'the pedestal as set forth.
5 In a lamp-holder-the combination of a pedestal formed with a supplemental tubular post and with a vertical slot and lateral slot extending therefrom in said post, a verticallymovable stem in the 'post, a lamp-support mounted on, said stem, a guide preventing said stem from turning, a vertically-movable collaron the aforesaid post provided witha lug engaging the aforesaid slots and serving to lock the stem in its raised position, a lampinclosing case mounted on the post, a chimneyholder mounted on said case, and gages on the lamp-support for adjusting the position of the lamp in relation to the chimneyholder as set forth.
