COMBINED LINE-COUNTER AND BooK-MARK.
srncrrrcnrron for-mingpart of Letters Patent No. 650,664, dated. May 29, 1900.
Application tiled duly 19,1899. Renewed Apri126,'1900 Serial No. 14,502. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARYA. V. WREBAoK, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Line-Counter and Book-Mark, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to a combined linecounter and book-mark.
It consists in an improved device adapted to be axed to the book and arranged for use in counting the printed lines of reading matter thereof, whereby the reader may select at a glance any specific line on a page or upon the immediately-opposite page, all substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an open book having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a' View in perspective of my improved line-counter and bookmark. Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view analogous to Fig. 3 and showing a modification of the book-mark and the manner in which it is engaged with the book.
In reading from books in which the lines are not numbered considerable delay and difculty has heretofore been experienced in counting down to and selecting a specific line of reading matter on a page of such book. This difficulty is obviated by my device, which indicates ata glance the line selected for reading without the necessity of counting from the top or bottom of the page.
In the construction of the book-mark a textile tape or ribbon l, of a length somewhat greater than the book upon which it is to be used, is provided on its top surface with the indicating-numerals 2, the same beginning with the numerall at the top and ending with the numeral which corresponds with the maximum number of lines of printing upon the pages of the book. To the upper end of this tape or ribbon l is secured, in any suitable manner, a short section of elastic tape 3, and to the end of said elastic tape is secured a small spring-clamp 4.
In the modification seen in Fig. L the elastic tape 3 and the clamp a are dispensed with,
and the tape 1 is extended a suitable distance beyond thel point on which the numeral l is printed.
When the preferred form of my improved device is in use, the spring-clamp l-is engaged upon the top of the book-back and the tape or ribbon l is brought over and drawn downwardly between the pages of the book that are being read, and by engaging the lower end of said tape or ribbon and drawing the same taut the .indicating-numerals 2 will be brought into direct alinement with 'the lines of reading matter upon the pages of the book and the reader may instantly ascertain any line of aseries without the necessity of counting the lines from the top or bottom.
By providing the section of elastic tape 3 the indicating tape or ribbon l can be instantly adj usted by a pull upon the lower end thereof to bring the indicating-numerals 2 into alinement withthe lines of reading matter upon the pages at any point in the book.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the upper end of the indicating tape or ribbon is secured directly to the upper end of the bookback, between said back and the leaves thereof, by means of paste or a suitable fastening device.
An improved line-counter and book-mark of my construction is simple, inexpensive, is readily attached to or detached from a book, and by its use a reader can instantly ascertain any particular line upon the pages of the book which he may be reading, and said device is self-adjusting in order that it may indicate the lines properly at any point in the book.
I-claim- 1. The combination with a book, of a combined line-counter and book-mark, comprising a strip of material connected at one end to the book and having upon its face a series of numerals which are separated from each other a distance corresponding to the distance between the lines on a page of said book, whereby the reader may select at a glance any specitic line on said page, and said device may be also used as a book-mark, substantially as specified.
2. A combined line-counter and book-mark, comprising a strip of material adapted to be xed at one end to the book-cover and carry- ICO ing a series of numerals corresponding in number to the number of lines on a page of said book, and a yielding connection between one end of said strip of material and the book, substantially as specified. Y
3. In a line-counter and book-mark,- a tape, on the face of which appear indicating-numerals, a section of elastic tape secured to 011e end of said first-mentioned tape, and a spring-clamp secured to the end of the elastie tape, substantially as specified. Y
4. In a line-counter and book-mark, the combination with a book of a line-indicatingV tape having mar-ks spaced apart corresponding to the distance between the book-lines, a
