ARNE s. TRAGETHON, on KENSETT, IOWA.
SHADE-ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,604, dated January 2, 1900.
Application filed October 5, 1899.
T aZZ whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ARNE S. TRAGETHON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kensett, in the county of Worth and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade-Rollers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable shade-rollers; and the object is to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efficiency whereby the roller may be adjusted to suit any window.
To these ends the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several elements of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my shaderoller as it appears in position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the winding end of the roller. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the opposite end. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line a; w of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a similar view taken on the line y y of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the brackets which support the roller in position.
1 denotes the solid end of the roller, which is provided with a flange 2 and a cylindrical journal 3,which has a bearing in the bracket 4.
5 denotes a band which has its lapped ends secured to the solid end of the roller contiguous to the flange 2 by the screw 6, and the end of the shade 7 is also secured between the lapped ends of said band by said screw 6. The opposite end of the solid roller 1 is adj ustably secured in the tube 8 by means of the screw 9, which passes through the ear 10 of the tube and the shade 7. This tube 8 is provided with a longitudinal slot 12, which forms a guide for the edge of the shade, and it is also formed with the ears 10 and OZwhich also overlap the shade and are secured in place by screws 9' and 9 the screw 9 entering a cylindrical block 13 and the screw 9 being adjustably secured in a sleeve 14, the oppo- Serial No. 732,651. (No model.)
site'end of which is secured in a tube 15 by the screw 9 which passes through the lapped ear 10 and shade, as in the prior instances, and the outer end of said tube 15 is formed with a spring-clip 16 to receive the outer end of the shade, as shown. This end of the tube 15 forms a bearing for the collar 17, which is integral with the flange 18, the latter being provided with a rectangular orifice 19 to receive the correspondingly-formed shank 20 of the bracket 20.
21 denotes a hub fixed in the collar 17 to receive the fixed end of the winding-shaft 22, which extends through the sleeve 14, its outer end terminating in a duplex ratchet 23, projecting into the path of the pawls 24 25, piv oted on the contiguous end of the sleeve.
26 denotes the winding spring encompassing the shaft 22, one end of the spring being fixed to the sleeve 14 and the other end to the stationary hub 21.
When the shade is drawn down, the tubes 15 and 8, the sleeve 14, and the roller 1 all rotate to wind up the spring and the shade held in position by either of the pawls 24 or 25, engaging the ratchet 23, whereas to raise the shade it is first drawn down a short distance and allowed to rewind rapidly, so that the pawls will be thrown outward by centrifugal force and pass the ratchet, and when the proper point has been reached the shade is stopped for a moment and'then allowed to move upward moreslowly to give the pawls time to drop by gravity into the ratchet and thereby lock the roller at the desired point.
As before stated, it will be understood that the solid roller 1 is longitudinally adjustable in the tube 8 by means of the screw 9, and the opposite end of said tube is correspondingly adjustable on the sleeve 14 by means of the screw 9 thus permitting the roller proper to be lengthened or shortened at will to correspond to the width of the shade and windowframe to which it is to be adjusted.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic Without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.
Having thus fully described my invention,
10 winding shaft and spring, and the ratchet fixed on said shaft in the path of said pawls, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARNE S. TRAGETHON.
