To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ROBERT FREDERICH TOCHTERMANN, a subject of the King of Bavaria, residing at 236 Oxford street, London, England, have invented an Improved Device for Holding and Retaining Ladies Hair, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an improved device for holding and retaining ladies hair, and comprises, essentially, three pivotally connected members, which members are provided with comb-teeth for passing into the hair and with outwardly and forwardly proj ecting flanges, wings, or blades, on which the hair maybe arranged and supported in knots, coils, or otherwise.

The object of the invention is'to provide an improved device of this character whereby the hair may be artistically coiled about the various prongs or blades of the device and be securely held and supported in position.

In order that my invention may be clearly understood, 1 will describe the same in detail, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a rear View, and Fig. 2 a central sectional side view, of the invention.

The letter a indicates the bottom member of the device, which is in the form of a comb curved somewhat after the manner of a ladys side comb and having its back or frame bent outwardly at right angles to the plane of the comb, so as to form a supporting-flange a. The ends a of said flange project beyond the comb and are curved slightly upward. The teeth 12 of this comb project downward, as shown. To each of the extremities of this comb or member is pivoted another member. 7), which members are also shaped in the manner of a side comb, having inwardly-directed teeth 11 for the purpose of retaining the device in the hair. These members 19 b, which form the sides of the device, may each be provided with an outwardlyprojecting flange similar to a; but I prefer instead to construct them with one or more outwardly-projecting wings or blades 1) Z2, having curved outlines and twisted in any desired manner. At their upper extremities these side-members are arranged to be secured or fastened together, and

this is preferably accomplished by providing one memberb with a curved spring end, which is designed to spring about the opposite mem ber b in the manner indicated at c.

In securing this device in place it is first opened out and the member or comb a is placed in position beneath the hair. The two side members I) b are thenbrought around the hair and their extremities secured together at the top, so that the comb-teeth b 0 enter or pass into the hair. The hair may then be parted into two or more portions and coiled or arranged upon the wings b b in any de-' sired manner.

It will be found that the curved comb or member a, with the downwardly-projecting teeth, provides a firm support for the coil of hair and aids materially in keeping it in place, said comb conforming in a measure to the curvature of the neck or lower portion of the head and its teeth holding the shorter hairs from falling. This object is further promoted by the flange a, which not only assists in supporting the coil, but also tends to keep the shorter hairs in position.

The' use of my improved hair-retaining device is not detrimental to the hair, as it has no tendency to cut or split the hair, while it will efficiently retain the same without being unduly tight or otherwise causing discomfort and without the least necessity for the employment of hair-pins.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. A device for holding and retaining la dies hair comprising a curved member having outwardly-directed teeth for retaining the shorter hairs of the neck, an independent member pivotally connected to said curved member at each extremity thereof and extend ing substantially at a right angle thereto and having teeth directed toward each other and means for securing said independent mem-' bers at their outer extremities, substantially as described.

A device for holding and retaining ladies hair comprising a horizontal member having a laterally-extending flange affording a ledge for supporting the coil of hair, an independent comb member pivoted to said horiextending substantially at a right angle thereto, and means for securing said independent members at their outer extremities, substantially as described 3. A device for holding and retaining ladies hair comprising a curved member havin g a laterall y-extendin g flange provided with projecting, curved end members, said flange and end members being designed to support the coil of hair, an independent comb member pivoted to said curved member at each extremity thereof and extending substantially at a right angle thereto and means for securing said independent comb members at their outer extremities, substantially as dethereof and extending substantially ata right angle thereto, and means for securing said independent comb members at their outer extremities, substantially as described.

5. A device for holding and retaining ladies hair comprising a horizontal member having outwardly-directed teeth and a laterally-extending flange provided With projecting end members, whereby to support the coil of hair, an. independent member pivoted to said horizontal member at each extremity thereof and extending substantially at aright angle thereto and having teeth directed toward each other, and means for securing said independent members at their outer ex tremities, substantially as described.
