LOUIS KOSSUTH JOHNSON AND ABBOT AUGUSTUS LO\V,'OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNORS TO THE ALDEN' TYPE MAOI-IINE COMPANY,

TYPE-SETTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,598, dated January 4, 1898.
Application filed November 3, 1896. Serial No. 610,906. (No model.)
-o @ZZ whom it nay concern:
Beit known that we, LoUIs KossUTH JOHN- soN and ABBor AUGUSTUS Low,citizens of the United States, resid ing in the city of Brooklyn,v
' use the same.
Our improvements relate to the class of compositors type-case set forth in our concurrent applications, Serial Nos. 608,600, 608,578, and (309,652, in which the several types forming a word or other combination of characters are forwarded from the lower end of a containingchannel, means being provided for adapting the device to the forwarding of different words or combinations by the relative adjustment of the parts. Heretofore the types have been forwarded onto a type-platform in front of the channel, by which platform they have been restricted in their movement during withdrawal by hand, necessitating care on the part of the compositor in withdrawing them over the type-platform in a plane parallel thereto. In our present application we dispense with the type-platform, confining the advanced types entirely between the under surface of the presser-foot and the upper edge of a yielding type-nger on the trigger-lever, so that the types, while fully sustained until wanted, readily adapt themselves to the fingers of the com positor and maybe withdrawn at various angles. tor to work more rapidly'and conveniently, and also rcducesuthe wear on the types.
Another feature of our invention consists in regulating and prescribing the position ofv This enables the composi-V abled to effect the adjustment of the parts to the requirements of different Words and conibinations without the removal of the channel, its holder, or the type-pusher. nection our invention also includes a special form of iiexible type-finger on the triggerlever whereby the linger is made adjustable in inclination as well as in height.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a series of channels, holders, tbc., constructed according to our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section upon plane of line 2 2, Fig. l; Fig. 3, a front elevation; Fig. 4, a detail View of the type-fin ger; Figs. 5 and 6, sectional elevations showing the parts adjusted for different words or combinations of types. Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views of the removable end of the trigger-lever.
The table or support A is formed with the sockets a, into which the tenons h of the holders I-I fit, as described in our prior applications hereinbefore referred to. The` front guard h and its presser-foot h2 form a permanent part of the holder H, as do the side walls h3 hf* and'back h5. Theextension of the side wall 71,3 forms the tenon h, while the opposite wall h4 extends down to and rests uponV the top of the table A.
The type-containing channel O is formed with the type-shoulder c, leaving the slot c on one side for the passage of the pusherblade P, the spine of the channel and the back ofthe holder being also slotted, as heretofore, to accommodate the pusher-blade.
The pusher-blade P is of maximum height,
say, for seven types, and is supported and reciprocated by any of the means heretofore described by us.
The bottom of the type-containing channel C rests upon the upper end of an adjustingscrew S, Vpassin g through the table A and having a jam-nut s, by which itis set after its adjustment to the height desired. The lower end of the screw S is square to engage with a key, or is otherwise formed to facilitate the adjustment of the screw.
It is obvious that other mechanical expedients may be substituted for the screw to afford an adjustable support upon the table for gio ble type-finger F, which is adjustable both in height and inclination.
The base f of the type-finger is formed With the longitudinal slot f through which passes the stem of the thumb-screw f2.
f3 is the iexible type-bearing pivoted to..
