FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,659, dated May 18, 1897.
Application filed October 3, 1896. Serial No. 607,788. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD PAYSON MAN- NING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Redford, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to fastening devices for shoe-laces and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class whereby the ends of a shoe-lace may be quickly and easily secured without tying the same, a further object being to provide an improved fastening device to be used in connection with laced gloves, corsets, and similar articles.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side View of the upper part of a shoe provided with my improved fastening device; Fig. 2, a perspective View of the main part of the fastening device detached from the shoe; Fig. 3, a similar view of the entire fastening device, showing the separate parts thereof connected; Fig. 4, a similar view showing the method of the operation of the fastening device; Fig. 5, a perspective view of a spring which forms a part thereof, and Fig. 6 a similar View of a lever which also constitutes a part of the fastening device.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at 7 the upper part of a shoe which is provided with the usual lace or cord 8 and with my improved fastening device 9.
My improved fastening device consists of a main disk or plate 10, having at one side a curved or segmental arm 11, to which is secured an outer supplemental disk or plate 12, which is provided transversely of its top and in line with the arm 11 with a slot 13, in which is pivoted a lever 14, which is provided with a depending end or arm 15, through the upper portion of which is a transverse hole or passage 16, through which a pivot-pin 17 passes, and the forward or free end of the lever 14 is curved downwardly, as shown at 26.
a horizontal base portion 19, which is longitudinally corrugated, and an upwardly and outwardly curved arm 20, the free end 21 of which in the open position of the fastening device extends upwardly to the front edge of the outer or upper disk or plate 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
The spring 18 is secured on the disk or plate 10, as shown in Fig. 3, with the base portion 19 parallel with the slot 13 in the disk or plate 12, and the lever 14 is pivoted in said slot 13, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4, in such manner that the arm 15 thereof will always rest upon the arm of the spring 18, and when the free end 17 of the lever 14 is depressed, as shown in Fig. 4, the arm 15 thereof will force the arm 20 of the spring 18 downwardly and cause it to securely grasp and hold a lace 22, as shown in said figure, the lace 22 being grasped between the base portion 19 of the spring 18 and the arm 20 thereof.
The disk or plate 10 may be secured to a shoe or other article in any desired manner, and in practice I may secure to the bottom thereof a short tube 23, the lower end of which is provided with teeth or projections 24, and by means thereof the fastening device may be secured to a shoe or other article in the same manner as the ordinary eyelets or hooks now employed, and the outer end of the slot 13 is closed by a transverse pin 25, which. limits the downward movement of the free end of the lever 14.
It will be apparent that this device may be used in connection with a corset for fastening the ends of the strings thereof and also in connection with laced gloves for a similar purpose and in connection with many other and similar articles.
My improved fastening device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
