* UNITED STA'IES [P TENT GFFIQE EUGENE IERRY, OF ITHACA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO BRADFORD ALMY, OF SAMEPLAOE.
MUCILAGE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,297, dated April 30, 1895.
Application filed September 13, 1894. Serial No. 522,923- (No'modeL) To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE TERRY, of Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins, in,the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mucilage-Holders, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in mucilage holders and particularly to the means for spreading the mucilage upon a surface, having a roller to act as a distributor, and the object is to prevent the roll from becoming glued to the sides of the cap and to keep the mucilage from drying up or hardening.
To this end my invention consists in the combination with a mucilage holder, of a cap having a mouth, a roller pivoted in the cap separated from the sides of the same, and a curved swinging cover to close the mouth of the cap and fulorumed on the shaft of the roller; and my invention consists in certaip other combinations of parts hereinafter described and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed and accompanying this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cap for a mucilage holder provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, showing the cover open or raised; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of same showing the cover closed. Fig.
4 is the front elevation of the cap mounted on the mucilage holder. Fig. 5 is a view of my improved roller removed from the cap, and Fig.6 is the funnel in the cap.
Referring specifically to the drawings, A is the bottle or holder for the mucilage which may be formed in any shape and of any suitable material, as glass or metal.
B is a metallic cap which is preferably open on one side only, the opening being termed the month. Within the cap, B, pivoted in its walls, protruding from and nearly closing said mouth is a roller, 0, of some hard inflexible substance, preferably metal, which distributes the mucilage upon a surface when the holder is inverted and the roller is rolled upon the said surface, as usual.
I-Ieretofore the roller has been made to fit closely to all the sides of the cap, causing the parts to become glued or cemented together quickly. This was done to keep the holder as completely closed as possible, so as to prevent the mucilage from dryingpp and to limit the flow of mucilage, but with my present invention this objection is overcome although the sides of the roller may be separated widely from the sides and edges of the cap, as hereinafter explained.
Within the cap, B, below the roller, is a funnel-shaped piece, b, which is contracted as it approaches the roller and is provided with a curved opening, 0, close to the center of the periphery of the roller, which feeds the mucilage to the roller spreading it evenly upon its periphery as the roller is turned.
In order to prevent the mucilage from spreading beyond the sides of the roller when the latter is rolled over a surface, only the central portion is knurled as shown, while the sides are p1ain-the roller having a somewhat smaller diameter at its sides than at its center. In the lower part of the funnel at or near the edge which is soldered to the inside of the neck of the cap is a small hole or slot, 0', to allow the mucilage, which drains from the upper part of the cap and the periphery of the roller, to drip back into the bottle.
In order to cover the roller and close the mouth of the cap more completely, so that the mucilage will not dry up or harden on the roller or interior of the cap, I provide a curved hood or cover, D, for the roller, which completely closes the mouth in the cap B. This curved hood is provided with flat sides which form segments of a circle and are pivoted or fulcrumed on the axle of the roller, 0, on each side thereof. The small shoulders, 01, formed on the axle serve to separate the sides of the roller from the sides of the hood. A small lip, e, on the edge of the hood serves not only as a means whereby the hood is operated, but helps to more completely close the month of the cap.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-is
k 1. The combination with a mucilage holder, of a cap therefor provided with a mouth, a roller pivoted in the cap and separated from the sides of the same, and a curved swinging cover to close the mouth of the cap and fulcrnmed on the shaft of said roller, as set forth.
2. The combination with a mucilage holder, of a cap therefor provided with a mouth on one side, a roller pivoted in the said cap and protruding therefrom through the mouth, and a curved swinging cover having sides to turn on the axle of the roller between the latter and the cap, as set forth.
3. The combination with a mucilage holder, of a cap therefor provided with a month, a roller pivoted in the said cap and protruding from the mouth, a funnel-shaped piece secured in the neck of the cap and having its contracted end near the periphery of theroller, and an aperture at the outer edge of said funnel, as and for the purpose set fort-h.
4. The combination with a-mucilage holder, of a cap therefor provided with a -mouthon one side, a roller pivoted in the said cap and protruding therefrom through the mouth, and a curved swinging cover havingsides to turn on the axle of the roller between the latter and the cap, a funnel shaped piece secured in the neck of the cap and having its contracted end near the periphery of the roller, and an aperture at the outer edge of said funnel, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination with a mucilage holder, of'a cap therefor provided with a mouth, a roller pivoted in the said cap and protruding therefrom through the mouth, said roller having the central portion of its periphery roughened and its side portions plain and smaller in diameter, shoulders on the axle on each side of the roller, and a curved swinging cover having sides to turn on the axle of the roller between the shoulders and the sides of the cap, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
