IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-AXLE BOXES.
Specification forming part of'Letters Patent No. 50,648, dated October 24, 1865.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK WOOD, of Bridgeport, Slate of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage- Axle Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The figure represents a carriage-axle box in section, A being the oil-chamber in the interior of the same. This oil-chamber in the ordinary axle-boxes consists of a recess formed around the interior of the axle'boX, which recess, when the axle is in place in the box, constitutes an oil-chamber about the axle, and in this form is well known and in common use.
My improvement consists in forming one or more partitions across said recess, (represented by B B in the figure,) whereby the oil in the chamber is carried around and over the top of the axle with every revolution of the wheel, instead of settling and remaining in the bottom of the chamber under the axle, as in the ordinary axle-boxes.
What I claim as my in veution, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The forming of one or more partitions across the oil-chamber recess, in the manner described, or in any other manner substantially the same.
