Description

{No Model.)
E LUDDE TAPER FOR NIGHT LIGHTS.
No. 484,210 Patented oct. 11, 1892.
INVENTOH 3 I Judd a BYWMM ATTORNEYJ,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFicE.
ELARD LUDDE, OF MASPETH, NEW YORK.
TAPER FOR NIGHT-LIGHTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,210, dated October 1 1, 1892.
Application filed December 29, 1891. Serial No. 416,486. (No model.)
used in connection with an adequate swimmer consisting of a circular plate that is supported by corks on sweet oil or other illuminating substances.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved taper for night-lights which can be manufactured at less cost than the tapers used and made heretofore and which is superior to the same, as it will burn for a greater length of time without giving out and the invention consists of a taper for night-lights,
composed of a supporting-disk of suitable press-board or other suitable material provided with a central opening and short radial recesses extending from said opening, into which the lower end of the waxed wick is pressed, so as to form an enlarged head, by which the reliable connection of the wick with the disk is obtained.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view ofa night-light with my improved taper. top view of the disk. Fig. 3 isa vertical transverse section of the taper on line 3 3 of Fig. 4; and Fig. i is a plan View, the wick being shown in horizontal section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a disk, which forms a base-and support for the waxed wick B, said disk being preferably Fig. 2 is a detail of the slots open, so that the oil has ready access to the wick of the taper. Without the slots it was found that not only the connection between the base and wick was not so reliable, but thesuction of the wick on the oil was not sufficient to sustain the taper for a long period of time. With the slots the taper can be used continuously for thirty hours.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent v 1. A taper for night-lights, composed of a disk having a central opening and radial slots, and a wick inserted into said opening and formed into a head at the under side of the disk, substantially as set forth.
2. A taper for night-lights, composed of a disk having a central opening and radial slots extending from said opening and a wick the lower end of which is made to form a head, portions ofwhich are pressed into the inner ends of the radial slots, but leaving the outer ends of the same open, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
V ELARD LUDDE. W'itnesses:
