Description

(No Model.)
LA MOTTE O. ATWOOD. ARMATURE.
Patented Apr. 14,1891.
I ui Hi UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LA MOTTE C. ATWOOD, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE ATWOOD ELECTRIC COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ARMATURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,552, dated April 14, 1891.
Application filed October 28, 1890. Serial No- 369,548. (No model.)
T (0% whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LA Mor'rn C. A'rwoon, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Armatures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvexo ments in the construction of armatures; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure I is an end view of my improved armature, part in section. Fig. II is a vertical section thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a shaft, upon which the armature may be mounted.
2o 2 represents independent hubs fitted on the shaft and provided with arms or spokes 4.
3 represents a ring having projections 5, and which is wrapped between the projections. The Wrapping is of sufficient thickness, so that its outer surface is flush with the outer ends of the projections. After the wrapping is done a cylinder 6, composed of magnetic metal, is slipped on and secured by screws 7 to the projections. The cylinder fits down closely upon the wrapping, and by thus making an armature there is practically no airspace between the outer shell or cylinder and the wrapping. Vhen the ring has been wrapped and the cylinder applied, the ring is slipped over the shaft. The hubs 2 are then slipped onto the shaft and the cylinder made fast to the outer ends of their arms by screws 8, passing axially into said arms, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. II.
For the purpose of keeping the armature cool, I use flat arms 4, placed or formed with their sides oblique or at an angle to the line of the shaft 1 or the axis of the armature, so that the turning of the armature will create a current of air through its central portion.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the shaft, of the independent hubs 2, fitted thereon and having the arms or spokes 4:, a wrapped ring encircling the shaft between the spokes of said hubs and having the proj ections 5, a removable cylinder fitted snugly over the wrapped ring and being revoluble with the shaft, screws 7, securing said cylinder to said projections 5, and the screws 8, passing through said cylinderinto said spokes, substantially as set forth.
