' T-VF. VANDEGRIFT.
' WRENCH.
No. 444,171. Patented Jan. 6, 1891.
9 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICB THEODORE F. VANDEGRIFT, OF SHELBYVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE VANDEGRIFT MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
' WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,171, dated January 6, 1891.
Application filed January 2, 1890- Serial No. 335,618. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE 'F. VANDE- GRIFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is to produce a wrench adapted to take the place of [O the ordinary monkey wrench, which shall not include the screw feature common to such wrenches. Said object is accomplished by providing one rigid and one pivoted jaw, a loop or clip extending from said rigid I 5 around said pivoted jaw, and a sliding wedge adapted to pass between said loop or clip and said pivoted jaw, between which and the rigid jaw a spring is also preferably inter posed.
It further consists in certain details of construction, as will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a top or plan view of a wrench embodying my said invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical section of the same; Fig. 4, a
0 transverse vertical section of the same, looking toward the right from the dotted line 4 4 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 5, a similar view looking toward the left from the dotted line 5 5 in Fig. 2.
5 In said drawings the portions marked A represent the handle of the wrench; B, the rigid jaw; O, the pivoted jaw; D, the loop or clip; E, the wedge, and F the spring. The handle A is preferably an ordinary wooden o tool-handle, mounted on a shank of the rigid jaw of the wrench. The jaw B extends out from the handle A, and is preferably formed integrally with the shank of the handle. It is provided with ears I), in which the jaw O is 5 pivoted. The jaw G is pivoted in the ears b on the jaw 13 by means of a pivot c. It extends out alongside and to the same distance as the jaw B and passes through the loop or clip D. It preferably has a groove 0, into which a wing on the wedge E enters, and on the upper side of said jaw are preferably fine serrations with which corresponding serrations on the wedge will engage, and thus hold said wedge in position. The loop or clip D is preferably rigidly attached to the jaw B and extends up around the shank of the jaw O, as shown most plainly in Fig. 3. It holds the jaws firmly in proper relation to each other, and also serves as a bearing with which the upper side of the wedge comes in 50 contact. The wedge E is preferably a long slim wedge, the point of which is at all times secured in place by the loop or clip D, and the rear portion of which is held in position on the jaw O by two wings e e, the former of which is bent inwardly and enters the groove 0 in said jaw, while the other extends'down alongside said jaw on the opposite side thereof. By moving this wedge to the desired position the jaw C is forced toward or permitted to recede from the jaw B,as will be readily understood, and the adjustment of the wrench is thus effected. The spring F may be either a flat or spiral spring, as desired, and serves to keep the jaws apart when not forced toward each other by the operation of the wedge.
As will be readily understood, my wrench is not only simple in construction and efficient in operation, but it is very easily and quickly adjusted, and is not liable to get out of order.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, in a wrench, of two jaws, one of which is pivoted to move toward and from the other, a loop surrounding said jaws, and a wedge whereby one may be forced toward the other, said jaw being provided with go a groove into which the point of a wing on said wedge may enter and whereby said wedge is held in place thereon substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a wrench, of a rigid 5 jaw, a loop or clip mounted on said jaw and extending up around a pivoted jaw, said pivoted jaw, and a wedge mounted on said pivoted jaw and adapted to move longitudinally thereof and underneath said loop or clip, 10o whereby said pivoted jaw may be moved in relation to said rigid jaw, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a wrench, of a rigid and a pivoted jnmn loop or clip surrounding In witness whereof I have hereunto set [0 them, a Wedge mounted on said pivoted jaw my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, and provided with wings which extend down this 21st day of December, A D. 1889. alongside thereof, whereby it is held in posi- 5 lion and adapted to move longitudinally THEODORE F. VAXDEGRIFI. [L.S.]
thereof and underneath said loop or clip, and it spring interposed between said jaws and Witnesses: acting reversoly to said wedge, substantially CHESTER BRADFORD,
as set forth. JAllIES WALSH.
