DENTAL PLUGGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,691, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed December 6; 1889- Serial No. 332,732. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LEWIS TEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marionville, in the county of Lawrence and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dental Pluggers, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dental pluggers, the object of which is to provide an efficient instrument that will give a backward or forward blow, as desired. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a plugger hand-piece embodying my invention with the parts adjusted to strike a backward blow. Fig. 2 is also a longitudinal sectional view with the parts adjusted to strike a forward blow. Fig. 3 shows views in detail of parts of the instrument separate from their connections.
In the said drawings, which form apart of this application, 4. is an outer casing or tube. Screw-threaded to the forward end of this casing is a conical point 5, provided with a central bore, in which are located springs 6, said bore having formed therein a ring 15, perforated for the free passage of the plugger-point socket to furnish a bearing for the same and for the adjacent ends of the springs 6 seated thereon. Said springs 6 allow the plunger to drive the plugger-point forward or backward without moving the instrument, the springs being further held in place by a plugger-point socket 7 and the end of the plunger-rod 8, said plugger-point socket 7 having a stem which is connected to the plunger-rod 8 at 9 by a screw thread. On the out.- side of point 5 is secured a spring 12, one end of which enters said point and engages slot 19 in plugger-point socket 7 to prevent rotation thereof when the plugger is in operation. When it is desired to adjust the socket 7, the spring 12 is raised out of the slot 19. In the other end of the casing 4 is secured a plug or cap 10, provided with a body portion 10 pro jecting inside of tube a and having a central aperture, in which one end of plunger-rod 8 is supported. The outer end of cap or plug 10 is also provided with a central aperture, in
which is placed a reversible tube 11. It is also provided with a small transverse opening 10, which engages with similar openings in tube 11. A groove or slot al is cut in the side of the plug or cap 10, connecting the transverse opening 10 with the interior of the casing. The tube 11 is divided longitudinally at one end by a partition, which extends half the length of the tube, making two passages in this part of the tube, both ends of one of the passages being closed and each passage having a hole in it to engage holes 10 in said cap or plug 10. The outer end of tube 11 is provided with screw-threads and small apertures, over which the nut 2 works. By turning the nut 2 backward one or more of the small apertures are exposed, thus regulating the flow of air out of tube 4 of the plugger hand-piece.
Attached to casing or tube 4: is a small tube 16, which servesto conduct air into the front end of the instrument through holes 10 and 21 in the backward stroke. In the forward stroke this tube serves to conduct the air from the front end of the instrument. This tube 16 may be suitably secured to the tube 4 by solder, or it may be formed integral therewith.
Inside of tube or casing 4 there are two springs 18, located one at each end, for the purpose of softening the rebound stroke of the plunger 24:. A smaller tube 14 is placed and fits snugly in casing at, and is moved to either end by a screw secured to tube 14, which slides in a slot in casing 4, the object or use of this tube 14: being to compress the springs 18 at either end of the casing d out of the reach of the plunger. In the center of this tube is located a rod 8, provided With shoulders 25 at each end to receive the blows from the plunger 24. Plunger 24 is made of shown in Fig. 2. The air is admitted through the opposite aperture and strikes the back of plunger 24: and forces it forward, the air in front of the plunger escaping through aperture 21, thence through tube 16,11o1e or aperture 20, and out of the instrument. The air forced into the instrument must also be withdrawn by the same device, so as to draw the plunger back for another blow.
To prevent any leakage of air I provide a suitable packing 22, of rubber or other material, inside of plug or cap 10, which bears against tube 11.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. In a dental plugger, the cap 10, the conical point 5, the outer casing 4-, having a slot and uniting said cap and point, a plungerrod mounted in bearings within the casing and provided with shoulders near its opposite ends, a plunger mounted to reciprocate on said rod, said rod being adapted to receive a plugger-point socket, springs 18 in said easing surrounding the plunger-rod, and their outer ends bearing, respectively, against said cap and conical point, a tube 14, fitted to slide in said casing and bear against the in ner ends of said springs, a knob or screw secured to said tubeand adapted to pass through and work in the slot of the casing, whereby the springs may be adjusted for the purpose set forth, and means for reciprocating the plunger, substantially as described.
2. In a dental plugger, the 1ongit-udinally perforated cap 10, provided with airinlet and outlet ports, the conical point 5, the casing 4, uniting said cap and point,a tube 16, secured to said casing and provided with openings 20 and 21 in its inner Wall, and a plunger-rod and plunger in said casiu g, and a reversible airtube 11, mounted in the longitudinal perforation of the cap and having a partition therein provided with inlet and outlet ports adapted to register with the ports of the cap and the opening 20 of the tube 16, whereby the plunger may be reciproeated, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
The combination, in a dental plugger, of a conical point 5, having a central bore, a ring 15, formed therein, springs 6,21, plugger-point socket 7, and a plunger and plunger-rod, all operating as described.
4. In a dental plugger, the conical point 5, having a central bore and plugger point socket, a slot 19 in said plugger-point socket, and a spring 12, secured to the outside of and entering said point and engaging slot 19 to prevent rotation of said plugger-point socket while in operation, substantially as described.
