To all whom, it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, JOHN F. BARBER, a citi- Zen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Billiard-Cues and Chalk-Holders, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention has relation to chalk-holders for containing blocks of chalk for chalking the tips 'of billiard-cues.

The objects of the invention are to provide a holder adapted to be sprung over the chalk and to be grasped by the hand of the player during the operation of chalking and serving to prevent the fingers of the player from becoming chalked, to adapt the block and holder for insertion into the butt-end of the billiardcue, and to provide means for maintaining the holder within said butt.

lVith the above general objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the lower portion of abilliardcue, a portion being shown in longitudinal scction,said cuebeing provided with a chalkholder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail in side elevation of the holder with a block of chalk mounted therein. Figs'. 3, 4, and 5V are details in side elevation of modified constructions of holders.

In practicing my invention the only essentiality thereof is an elastic cylinder l, adapted to be stretched and sprung over the end of a block of chalk 2. The cylinder may be of any shape in cross-section to agree with the chalk, and may or may not be provided with a handle or knob for grasping and manipulating the same.

Referring more particularly to Fig. 2, l designates, as before stated, the elastic cylinder, preferably formed of india-rubber, and the same is mounted upon a disk-shaped base 3, of rubber or other suitable material. Upon the under side of the disk is formed or secured a knob or handle 4. In the bore or recess is inserted theholder heretofore described, the exterior surface of thc cylinder l taking frictional contact with the inner surface of the recess. IVhen used in connection with a cue, the disk-shaped base 3 is slightly larger in diameter than is the elastic cylinder, so that said base extends under the lower end of the cue, as shown.

The wall of the cylinder l may have contact with the surface of the bore entirely around the same, or, as shown in Figs. 2,3, 4, and 5, frictional projections may be formed uponV the exterior surface thereof.

In Fig. 2 a series of axial ribs 7 are provided. In Fig. 3 a series of small lugs yof square shape are provided at the upper edge of the elastic cylinder. In Fig. 4 I provide a spiral rib 9, and in Fig. 5 a series of conical lugs 10. The objects of these lugs, ribs, &c., are to take frictional Contact at various points IOO of the surface of the bore G, and thus prevent a too ready Withdrawal of the holderin other Words, to maintain the holder Within the recess during all ordinary manipulations of the cue.

If desired, the knob 4 may be omitted, as shown in Fig. 5, in Which case I will prefer to mill the periphery of the disk-shaped base 3.

From the above construction it will be apparent that when necessary to chalk the tip of his cue a player needs only to slightly invert the cue and Withdraw the holder from the recess in which it is seated, and after using the chalk the same is returned toits proper position. By this invention the player has at all times the chalk convenient and Within reach.

Having described my invention, what I claim is l. The cue provided at its butt-end with a recess and the chalk-receiving holder fitting 2. The cue provided at its butt-end with a longitudinal bore or recess and the removable chalk-holder mountedin the bore and having its exterior surface provided with compressible projections taking frictional contact with the Wall of the bore, substantially as specified.

The cue provided at its butt-end with a longitudinal bore or recess, and the hereindescribed holder formed of rubber, inserted in the bore, the same consisting of an elastic Wall adapted to be sprung over a block of chalk, a disk-shaped base of a diameter greater than therwall, the said Wall being` provided With an external projection for taking frictional contact with the Wall of the recess, substantially as specified. l

4. The cue provided at its butt-end With a bore or recess and an elastic chalk-embracing holder provided with external compressible lugs, all formed of a singley piece of rubber, substantially as specified.
