Abstract

A system for collecting emissions from coke ovens through the doors thereof during the coking of coal. A chimney is provided for each coke oven to create an upward flowing draft for conveying emissions escaping through the associated coke oven door through the chimney into a manifold and hence to a cleaner for treating the emissions to remove pollutants therefrom. The cleaned emissions may then be exhausted to the atmosphere.

It is a principal object of the present invention to provide a pollution control system for collecting emissions escaping through coke oven doors prior to the self-sealing of the coke oven doors to the associated frame.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a pollution control system for collecting emissions from coke ovens through the doors thereof produced during the coking of coal, the system comprising a plurality of chimneys corresponding to the number of coke ovens, each chimney being positioned outside of the associated coke oven to create a draft flowing upwardly adjacent to the coke oven door, a manifold connected to each of the chimneys to collect emissions from the coke ovens conveyed by the drafts flowing upwardly through the chimneys and into the manifold, and a cleaner connected to a source of reduced pressure and to the manifold for treating the emissions flowing upwardly through the chimneys and into the manifold to remove pollutants therefrom, whereby emissions escaping from the coke ovens through the doors thereof flow upwardly through the chimneys into the manifold and into the cleaner to be treated therein thereby preventing pollution of the atmosphere.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a pollution control system of the type set forth in which each of the chimneys has as a part of one wall thereof the associated coke oven door.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a pollution control system of the type set forth wherein each chimney has a door opposite the associated coke oven door to facilitate access to the coke oven.
These and other objects of the present invention will be better understood by reference to the appended drawings in which:

ual coke ovens 55. A common top wall 56 covers and forms a part of each of the individual coke ovens 55 in the bank of coke ovens 50. Each of the individual coke ovens 55 is provided with a plurality of charging ports 57 extending through the top wall 56 of the coke oven and providing communication between the coke oven chamber and the outside of the bank of coke ovens 50. While each of the individual coke ovens 55 is provided with pusher side end wall and a coke side end wall, only the coke side end wall 58 is shown in the drawings.
Each coke oven 55 is provided with a coke oven door 60 in the coke oven end wall 58 positioned intermediate buckstays 61 which form a part of framing for the coke ovens 55. The buckstays 61 are adjacent to and on opposite sides of each coke oven door 60, with each buckstay 61 having one end thereof fixedly mounted to the brick work of the bank of coke ovens 50.
In the first embodiment of the present invention, a chimney 65 is provided for each of the associated coke ovens 55. The chimney 65 is mounted above the associated coke oven door 60 and includes a front wall 66 spaced away from the associated coke oven 55. The wall 66 is mounted to the free ends of the associated buckstays 61. Thus the chimney 65 is formed of a front wall 66, the two buckstays on each side of the associated coke oven door 60 and the end wall 58 of the coke oven 55. The chimney 65 forms a flue 67 which establishes a draft flowing upwardly adjacent to the associated coke oven door 60 through the flue 67. A manifold 70 is connected to the associated chimney 65 and establishes a flow path for the emissions escaping from the coke oven door 60 and conveyed upwardly through the chimney 65 by the draft. The manifold 70 is connected to a cleaner 75, which may be a cyclone cleaner or a gas-water cleaner, all as is well known in the art, for treatment of the emissions from the coke oven. Downstream of the cleaner is an exhaust fan in communication with the cleaner 75 and the manifold 70 thereby to provide reduced pressure in the manifold 70 to enhance the draft in the flue 67 of each individual chimney 65. The flow path for the gases emitted from the coke oven 55 through the door 60 thereof is denoted by the arrows 71.
A second embodiment of the present invention is shown in the right-hand portion of FIG. 1 wherein in each of the chimneys is formed of a wall 166 mounted on the associated buckstays 61 above the associated coke oven door 60. The wall 166 is similar to the front wall 66 of the first embodiment of the present invention and forms a flue 167 between the wall 166, the buckstays 61 and the associated end wall 58. Each of the walls 166 is in communication with the manifold 70, the connection between the manifold 70 and the wall 166 portion of the chimney 165 being substantially air tight.
The chimneys 165 are each provided with a chimney door 170. Each of the doors 170 includes a front sheet metal panel 171 mounted to an associated buckstay 61 by means of spaced apart hinges 172. Each of the sheet metal doors 170 is provided with a handle 173 and has the bottom edge 174 thereof spaced above the bottom end of the associated coke oven door 60.
The chimneys 165 operate in substantially the same manner as the chimneys 65; however, the provision of the sheet metal doors 17%) enhances the draft of the chimneys to improve the collecting efficiency of the system. The chimneys 165 are each provided with the doors 170 to facilitate access to the coke oven doors 60. Since it is necessary to gain access to the coke oven doors 60 in order to remove the coke from the coke ovens 55, the doors 170 are movable between an opened position thereof wherein access to the associated coke oven door 60 is facilitated and a closed posi tion thereof wherein the doors form a part of the chimneys 165 and enhance the draft thereof. The flow path for the drafts is shown by the arrows 181 entering the associated chimney 165 from the bottom edge 174 thereof upwardly through the flue 167 into the manifold 70. Emission from the coke oven 56 through the door 60 thereof are conveyed by the draft to the manifold 70. After the emissions are conveyed to the manifold 70, the system operates as hereinbefore disclosed with the fan 80 providing suction rapidly to convey the emissions through the manifold and into the cleaner 75. In the cleaner 75, particulate matter such as coal dust and the like is removed, and if necessary the cleaned emissions are passed through an appropriate treatment bath, and thereafter exhausted to the atmosphere via the exhaust 81 as shown by the arrow 82.
Although two embodiments of the present invention have been shown, the central idea of the system is the provision of a chimney outside the coke oven, which chimney creates a draft adjacent to the oven door to convey emissions from the coke oven through the chimneys into a manifold wherein the gases can be collected and treated before being exhausted to the atmosphere.
While there has been described herein what is considered to be the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it will be understood that various modifications and alterations may be made herein without de' parting from the true spirit and scope of the invention, and it is intended to cover in the appended claims all such modifications and alterations as fall within the true spirit and scope of the present invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A pollution control system for collecting emissions from coke ovens through the doors thereof produced during the coking of coal, said system comprising a plurality of chimneys corresponding in number to the number of coke ovens, each chimney being positioned outside of the associated coke oven and having as part of one wall thereof the associated coke oven door and having spaced-apart buckstays generally normal and fixed to the coke oven wall door as side walls thereof and a wall maintained on said buckstays parallel and separated from the coke oven door, the bottom of the chimney being open to create a draft flowing upwardly adjacent to the coke oven door, a manifold connected to each of said chimneys to collect emissions from the coke ovens conveyed by the drafts flowing upwardly through said chimneys and into said manifold, and a cleaner connected to a source of reduced pressure and to said manifold for treating the emissions flowing upwardly through said chimneys and into said manifold to remove pollutants therefrom, whereby emissions escaping from the coke ovens through the doors flow upwardly through said chimneys into said manifold and into said cleaner to be treated therein thereby preventing pollution of the atmosphere.
2. The system set forth in claim 1, wherein each of said chimneys includes a door opposite to the coke oven door to facilitate access to the coke oven door.
3. The system set forth in claim 1, wherein each of said chimneys includes a sheet metal door h'ingedly mounted on one of said buckstays opposite the coke oven door to facilitate access thereto.
4. The system set forth in claim 1, wherein each of said chimneys has a wall fixedly mounted above the associated coke oven door and a door mounted below said wall and opposite the associated coke oven door, said chimney door in the closed position thereof cooperating with said wall to create an upward flowing draft adjacent to the coke oven door, said chimney "door in the opened position thereof facilitating access to the associated coke oven door.
5. The system set forth in claim 1, wherein the bottom of each of said chimneys is spaced above the bottom of the associated coke oven door to enhance the draft in said chimneys.

Claims (5)

1. A POLLUTION CONTROL SYSTEM FOR COLLECTING EMISSIONS FROM COKE OVENS THROUGH THE DOORS THEREOF PRODUCED DURING THE COOKING OF COAL, SAID SYSTEM COMPRISING A PLURALITY OF CHIMNEYS CORRESPONDING IN NUMBER TO THE NUMBER OF COKE OVENS, EACH CHIMNEY BEING POSITIONED OUTSIDE OF THE ASSOCIATED COKE OVEN AND HAVING AS PART OF ONE WALL THEREOF THE ASSOCIATED COKE OVEN DOOR AND HAVING SPACED-APART BUCKSTAYS GENERALLY NORMAL AND FIXED TO THE COKE OVEN WALL DOOR AS SIDE WALLS THEREOF AND A WALL MAINTAINED ON SAID BUCKSTAYS PARALLEL AND SEPARATED FROM THE COKE OVEN DOOR, THE BOTOM OF THE CHIMNEY BEING OPEN TO CREATE A DRAFT FLOWING UPWAARDLY ADJACENT TO THE COKE OVEN DOOR A MANIFOLD CONNECTED TO EACH OF SAID CHIMNEYS TO COLLECT EMISSIONS FROM THE COKE OVENS CONVEYED BY THE DRAFTS FLOWING UPWARDLY THRUGH SAID CHIMNEYS AND INTO SAID MAINFOLD, AND A CLEANER CONNECTED TO A SOURCE OF REDUCED PRESSURE AND TO SAID MANIFOLD FOR TREATING THE EMISSION FLOWING UPWARDLY THROUGH SAID CHIMNEYS AND INTO SAID MANIFOLD TO REMOVE POLLUTANTS THEREFROM, WHEREBY EMISSIONS ESCAPING FROM THE COKE OVENS THROUGH THE DOORS FLOW UPWARDLY THROUGH SAID CHIMNEYS INTO SAID MANIFOLD AND INTO SAID CLEANER TO BE TREATED THEREIN THEREBY PREVENTING POLLUTION OF THE ATMOSPHERE.
2. The system set forth in claim 1, wherein each of said chimneys includes a door opposite to the coke oven door to facilitate access to the coke oven door.
3. The system set forth in claim 1, wherein each of said chimneys includes a sheet metal door hingedly mounted on one of said buckstays opposite the coke oven door to facilitate access thereto.
4. The system set forth in claim 1, wherein each of said chimneys has a wall fixedly mounted above the associated coke oven door and a door mounted below said wall and opposite the associated coke oven door, said chimney door in the closed position thereof cooperating with said wall to create an upward flowing draft adjacent to the coke oven door, said chimney door in the opened position thereof facilitating access to the associated coke oven door.
5. The system set forth in claim 1, wherein the bottom of each of said chimneys is spaced above the bottom of the associated coke oven door to enhance the draft in said chimneys.
