SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,687. dated May 29, 1888. Application filed March 12, 1887. Serial No. 230,629. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PROSPER A. BARATET, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county ofPhiladelphia,-State ofPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corsets, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a corset embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section or part thereof.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

My invention consists of a corset having means for providing for natural defects in the body of the wearer.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a corset, which, excepting the features of my invention, isof usual form and construction. To the inside of the corset there are secured bands or pieces B O, of suitable fabric, which are set back from the body of the corset, the band B being located behind the back portion of one side of the corset, and the band C behind the hip portion thereof, it being seen that each band occupies part of the inner wall thereof, the outer wall of the corset, however, being of the usual contour.

By means of the bandsB Oprovision is made for natural defects of the human body at the back and hip thereof; but, as is evident, defects in the bust or other portions of the same may also be provided for by securing bands similar to B O to the proper part of the inside of the corset.

The bands B C bear against the defective part ofthe body of the wearer; but the portions of the corset outside of said bands preserve the shape desirable in corsets, and thereby conceal the defects as referred to.

The inner wall of the corset is provided'with stays D, which are opposite to the bands B O and extend in horizontal directions, the usual vertical stays of the corset, however, being employed, so that the portions of the corset opposite the bands, while being of highly flexible nature, possess sufficient rigidity to preserve their shape when the corset is worn, said portions, owing to the bands B 0, being set out from the contiguous outer garments similar to corsets heretofore made.

I am aware that it is old to make a corset having inner pieces on the front portion thereof forthe purpose of securing in position pads, the object of said pads being to hold up or press the breastsin a lateral direction, so as to givea full or rounded appearance to the same. I am also aware that it is not new to secure flaps to the inner face of an underwaist, the said flaps being secured together in front by means of strings or otherwise, and such I do not claim; but I am not aware that it is old to make a corset and provide the same with inner pieces or st rips having their ends secured to the corset by a row or rows of stitching, for the purpose of fitting the same to the shape of the figure; neither is it old, so far as I am aware, to provide the inner walls of the corset opposite to the said pieces or strips with stays placed in a horizontal position, whereby the said portion of the corsetis materially strengthened, and thereby enabled to preserve its proper outward shape.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

An anatomical corset consisting of a body having secured thereto and within the same, at a place corresponding to the place of defect in the body of the wearer thereof, a strap of fixed length-secured at both ends by a row of stitching, (the position and length of said strap being determined by the character of the defeet in the body of the wearer,) the said corset-body having opposite to the strap and on the inner wall thereof horizontal stays, said parts being combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
