SHUTTER PASTENER. No. 380,788. Pai nted'Apr. 10, 1888...
lwwweo'ow "avg"? UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICEe JOSEPH A. BAGHMAN, OF AUSTIN, TEXAS.
SHUTTER-FASTENER.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,738, dated April 10, 1888.
Application filed July 11,1887. Serial No. 244,006. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. BAOHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin,in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Blind Locks; and I do doclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. a
This invention relates to window-blind fasteners or looks, and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient device, and one that can be conveniently operated from the inside of the blind, but not readily tampered with or opened from the outside without removing some of theslats of the blind.
The improvement consists in the novel fea tures of construction and arrangement of the fasteners, which are composed of two parts.
One part-a bolt-is carried by the blind, and the other part-a catch-is secured to the window-sill and locks the bolt, so that to unfasten the blind both hands are required-one hand to operate the catch, the other hand to operate the bolt.
The improvement further consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed,- and shown in the annexed drawings,in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of awindowblind, parts being broken away, embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a section on the line X X of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a cross-section of the catch on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a cross'section of the bolt on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. v
The bolt carried by and secured to the win- (low-blind O is composed of the plate A, having perforated ears (6 for the passage of the screws which secure it in place, and the longitudinal slot a, which is widened on the rear side of the plate, forming the shoulders a, the bolt B, located and adapted to slide in the slot, and having the lower portion of its sides extended or flanged, so as to fit under and engage with the shoulders a and prevent outward displacement of the bolt, and the coilspring D, placed on the stem d, projected from the rear of the bolt, and seated in the pocket d in the upper closed end of the plate, and forming a continuation of slot a. The lower end of the bolt B is widened, and is provided with a notch in its lower edge to receive and fit over asuitable stop on the window-sill, and lip 1), extended forward from its front edge, is adapted to be engaged by a suitable catch and lock the bolt down. The bolt is made in one piece with the stem d, the side flanges, and the li The catch is composed of plate E, having perforated lateral ears for the passage of the screws for securing it to the window-sill O and slots or openings e and e. The slot or opening 6 is widened 011 the rear side of the plate to form the shoulders e and is extended, forming the pocket 6 in the end of the plate. The latch-bolt F, sliding on the cross-bar e, separating the openingseand e, and having its front end extending into opening 6, has lateral flanges f, which fit under the shoulders e. The stem projection f, projected rearwardly from the rear end of the bolt, has the spring G mounted thereon and seated in the extension of slot or opening 6. The front end of opening e is closed by a cross-bar, h, which is beveled and forms a stop for the end of bolt B to engage with, and when thus engaged the end of the lateral bolt F projects over lip Z) and locks bolt B against vertical movement. To release bolt B from stop 71., it is necessary that latch-boltF be withdrawn and bolt B be moved upward. The lower or approximate ends of plates A and E meet substantially in a miterjoint, which allows the lower end of the bolt B to project forward a minimum length and the stop h and bolt F to be of a minimum height, which will be readily understood. The lateral flanges of the bolts B and F may be formed by plates slightly wider than said bolts and secured thereto, leaving a portion projecting on each side of the bolts, or they may be an integral part of said bolts. The bolts are inserted in the slots in the plates from the rear thereof, and are held in place by being confined between the plates and the surface against which said plates are secured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, with the plate A, having a longitudinal slot, and the bolt fitted and adapted to slide in said slot and provided with a projecting lip, of the catch composed of a plate having two openings, and a stop closing the outer end of one of the openings, and the latch-bolt fitted and sliding in one opening, and having its end extended across the opening closed by said stop and adapted to overlap said lip of the aforesaid bolt, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the two plates arranged at right angles to each other and havin g their approximate ends beveled, forming a miter-joint, each plate having a slot or opening, of the bolt fitted in the slot of one plate, and having its lower end widened or projected 2o forward and notched in its under edge and provided with aprojecting lip, thelatch-looltfitted in the slot of the other plate and adapted to fit over the lip of the aforesaid bolt, the stop h, and the springs seated in extensions of the slots and placed on stems projecting from thebolts, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH A. BAOHMAN.
