Abstract

A method of making an abstract picture which involves preparing a wood panel or wood section for application of differently colored coatings thereto. The surface of a wood panel; such as in plywood, has a multiplicity of irregular shape and size sections defined by distinctive, irregular wood graining. Dependent upon the cutting angle of a solid piece of wood, the cut section may provide a surface with a distinctive, somewhat regular line pattern from the age or year lines of the growth of a tree. The surface of the wood panel or wood section may further be sand blasted to give unique depth and contour irregularity, which can then be sealed. Conversely, the pores of the surface of the wood panel or sections may be filled to evenness, and then sealed. Thereafter, paints, lacquers or other opaque or translucent colored liquids can be used in applying the colored decorative coatings. Alternatively, colored pieces of paper, plastic, wood or metal materials may be cut respectively to be applied to sections within the outline defined by the graining. The unique, self imaginative, colored art creation could then be framed and hung. Furthermore, a kit may be provided which contains paints, brushes, wood panels and/or sections of different cuts and periphery shapes for making wood grain art pictures.

NATURE ART WOOD GRAIN PAINTING KIT This invention relates to an art wood grain painting kit. Conventional picture painting kits such as exemplified by U.S. Pats. Nos. 3,284,927, 3,315,374, 3,372,493, and the like, generally provide a flat piece of wood, cardboard or other picture base upon which a picture is drawn in outline, with the several parts of the picture numbered or otherwise coded so that appropriate specified colors can be applied in the numbered sections. The resulting picture when correctly done is a colored pictorial representation of the original drawing. This type of kit limits the creativity of the user to provide a stereotyped realistic picture with specified colors.

It is a primary object of the present invention to provide a painting kit wherein the user has a larger scope for his creative imagination. Furthermore, instead of a realistic representation of a predetermined subject, the user is provided with one or more panels, sections or plaques having distinctive random or regular wood graining on one or both sides thereof. The user has a free choice of colors to be applied to the panels, sections or plaques, using paints and brushes provided with the kit. The colors will be applied to the differently grained sections following the graining of the panels. The panels will preferably be made of plywood having distinctive graining. Fir plywood can be used because it is relatively inexpensive, but many other types of wood are known having rather bold, distinctive graining. The invention also contemplates provision of a kit including panels or plaques made of wood, plastic or composition material on which is preprinted or otherwise inscribed natural wood graining, several sections of which can be selectively colored by the user of the kit. In any case, the resulting pictures produced will all be different since no two grainings will be precisely alike. They will be abstract representations of the painters moods, inclinations and creative instincts. To this extent the completed pictures constitute abstract art. However, they all have the basic characteristic of differently colored natural wood grainings.

The panels, plaques or sections provided with the kit may have surfaces which have been sand blasted and sealed, or merely have had the pores sealed so that the panels are ready for painting. The paints provided with the kit can be in jars and/or tubes. The paints will preferably be quick drying. They can be translucent or opaque. Paints covering the entire spectrum of colors in different shades and including black and white can be provided. Metallic colors, such as silver, gold, copper and bronze may also be provided. Wood frames in finished or knock'down form can also be provided with the kit.

In the following detailed description of the invention, the terms painting and coating" shall be taken to include any method of applying translucent or opaque coating to a base. This will include lacquering, varnishing and the like, and includes any method of application, such as by brush, spraying, pasting, etc. It further includes adhering irregularly shaped pieces of paper, plastic or metal foil to a panel or the like. The term paint shall be taken to include any type of liquid coating material comprising colored materials or sub stances in a volatile fluid medium which leaves a colored film when dry on the surface to which it is applied. The term sand blastedshall be taken to include the finishing of the surface of a panel, plaque, section or the like to a smooth-like, or irregular depth and/or contour pattern.

Referring first to FIGS. 1 and 2, there is shown a semi-completed picture 20, which has been layer sectionalized for illustrative purposes. The wood panel or plaque 11, which is rectangular in form, is peripherally. enclosed in a display frame 12. The panel is flat and has pores in the surface of side 13, which may be filled by a wood filler or the like, and coated with a sealer 14. The panel surface has a very distinctive wood graining 15 dividing the entire surface into clearly defined sections 16 of irregular random shapes. Differently colored paints 17 are applied and confined to the sections outlined by the distinctive, bold, graining. Conceivably, both sides of a panel, plaque or wood section can be used for painting. It is also contemplated, according to the invention, to provide panels, plaques or wood sections made of wood, plastic or a composition material which ordinarily have no distinctive or characteristic grain, but which can be inscribed or printed simulated natural wood graining.

The panels can have other shapes and are not limited to the rectangular, circular and hexagonal shapes shown; for example, they can be elliptical, heart shaped, triangular, etc. In any case, all panels or a relatively low cost for mass distribution to the public.

In the central section are panels or plaques 11', 11c and 11d. having characteristic wood graining. The porous surfaces have been filled and sealed as described above and are ready for painting. Also in the box are parts 28 of one or more wood frames to be assembled together for framing the panels 11', 11c and 11d, after painting. Further included are paint brushes 30 of different sizes. Jars 32 contain different colored paints, while jar 34 contains a sealer. Lacquer, shellac, metallic varnish, oil paint, etc., can be included.

FIGS. 6 and 7 show a square rectangular wood section 41, which has been cut on a bias from a block of wood 42, shown in phantom in FIG. 7. The wood section 41 has distinct wood grain lines 43 which define sections 44 of irregular random shapes in which the individual may apply decorative coatings.

FIGS. 8 and 9 show an elliptical shaped wood section 51, which has been cut on a bias from a round stock of wood 52, shown in phantom in FIG. 9. The angular cutting of a round stock provides a unique wood section having elliptical grain or year lines which clearly define elliptical areas or sections 54 of-somewhat regular pattern. 1 v

The wood panel 60 in FIG. 10 is representative of a surface which has been sand blasted or embossed to obtain an irregular depth and contour pattern 61, better shown in the partially enlarged cross sectional view in FIG. 11. This type of surface provides natural highlighted areas 62 which may be emphasized by the color coating 63 used.

It is apparent that the kits will be of interest to very talented persons as well as unskilled ones, since there is no limit to the skill and creativity which the user can employ in painting the pictures. The user is not hampered by a prescribed outlined drawing as in prior paint-by-number kits. The finished pictures will be emotionally and aesthetically satisfying since the user can express moods and emotions by the colors he selects in painting the pictures.

Kits can be made up as simply or elaborately as consumers require. In any case, all kits will include panels or plaques with natural wood graining as described.

While a limited number of embodiments of the invention have been described, it should be understood that many variations are possible. For example, colored paper or plastic sheets or metal foils can be cut to correspond to the irregularly shaped sections outlined by the wood graining. These colored pieces can then be secured to the panels by suitable adhesives. In any case, the colored pieces will have the shapes of the sections outlined by the original wood graining of the panels. The kits will include supplies of such colored paper, plastic or metal foil sheets for use in making up the pictures. The invention also contemplates that some pictures can be made up by painting or coating in a variety of ways, such as by application of colored paints and by application of colored cut paper or plastic pieces to the same wood grained panel. Other variations and modifications are possible. In any case, the invention covers all such changes, variations and modifications as come wi in the ope a nd spirit of the appended claims. hat is c aime is:

l. A method of making an asbstract picture, comprising the steps of preparing. a fiat panel with artificial distinctive wood graining on at least one side thereof, said graining defining a multiplicity of sections of irregular shape; and applying differently colored coatings to said sections respectively on the panel, each colored coating being confined within the outline of a section defined by the graining on said panel, and wherein the step of preparing said panel comprises embossing the panels so that adjacent ones of said sections have different levels on said side of the panel.

2. A method of making an abstract picture, as defined in claim 1, wherein said panel is made of wood, said method including the further step of rendering said side of the panel substantially nonporous by filling and sealing prior to application of said colored coatings thereto.

3. A method of making an abstract panel, as defined in claim 1, wherein said coatings comprise film forming colored material in a volatile fluid medium.

4. A method of making an abstract panel as defined in claim 1, wherein said coatings comprise differently colored pieces of flexible sheet material,- said method comprising the further step of adhering said pieces of sheet material to said one side of the panel.

5. A kit for making an abstract picture comprising a fiat panel having 'on one side thereof a multiplicity of sections having irregular shapes defined by distinctive, irregular graining on the panel, and a plurality of containers of colored materials respectively applicable to different ones of said sections to constitute said picture; and wherein said panel is embossed so that adjacent ones of said sections are on different levels on said side of the panel.

6. A kit as defined in claim 5, further comprising a single other container for said panel and first named containers, and at least one brush in said other container for applying said colored materials to said panel.

7. A kit as defined in claim 5, wherein said panel has a predetermined geometrical shape, and further comprising another panel of different shape in said other container, said other panel having a multiplicity of other sections thereon of irregular and different shapes defined by distinctive irregular other graining on said other panel, said panels being arranged for coating by said coating materials.

8. A kit as defined in claim 5, wherein said panel is made of wood, and wherein pores in said side of the panel filled and sealed to form a nonporous surface for application of said colored materials thereto.

Claims

1. A method of making an asbstract picture, comprising the steps of preparing a flat panel with artificial distinctive wood graining on at least one side thereof, said graining defining a multiplicity of sections of irregular shape; and applying differently colored coatings to said sections respectively on the panel, each colored coating being confined within the outline of a section defined by the graining on said panel, and wherein the step of preparing said panel comprises embossing the panels so that adjacent ones of said sections have different levels on said side of the panel.

4. A method of making an abstract panel as defined in claim 1, wherein said coatings comprise differently colored pieces of flexible sheet material, said method comprising the further step of adhering said pieces of sheet material to said one side of the panel.

5. A kit for making an abstract picture comprising a flat panel having on one side thereof a multiplicity of sections having irregular shapes defined by distinctive, irregular graining on the panel, and a plurality of containers of colored materials respectively applicable to different ones of said sections to constitute said picture; and wherein said panel is embossed so that adjacent ones of said sections are on different levels on said side of the panel.
