R. 0. MG'MASTER. NASALRESPIRATOR.
` P tented Aug. 30, 1887.
UNITED 'STATES PATENT OFFICE.
y ROBERT OTTO MOMASTER, OF W'HEELING, WEST VIRGINIA.
NASAL RESPIRATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369.019, dated .August 30, 1887.
Application filed January 2G, 1887. Serial No. 5,539. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT OTTo McMas- TER, a resident of Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nasal Respirators; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of theA invention, which will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient and effective respirator for the nose, to prevent the inhalation of dustor poisonous chemicals calculated to injure the mucous membrane or lung-surface, and one that can also be used to ad vantage in the treatment of asthma and hypertrophic catarrh in the manner of an inhaler.
My invention consists of a respirator adapted to cover or incase the nose, made of caoutchouc, celluloid,'or an equivalent material not liable to be injured by acids or other chemicals,
. adapted to be' secured to the nose by springthem to the outer shell or wall of the respira tor, and thus secure and hold the respirator in position.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the respirator in position on the nose. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the respirator. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section, 'and Fig. 4 a horizontal or cross section. v v
The letter A designates the shell or case of the respirator, adapted to inclose the nose and to conform to the contour of the face. In the lower portion of this case is a compartment, B, adapted to the receival of suitable ltering material or absorbent substances, such as sponge or cotton. This compartment is covered with a perforated plate or wire-gauze top, C, and has a hinged bottomv plate, D, of similar construction, pivoted to lugs b b on the side of the case, and is secured in position by a spring-catch, a.
tion.
During respiration the air passes through this chamber in either direc- E is the space intended for the receival of the nose. In this space are located two springclamps, F F, arranged parallel with the side of the case and secured to the front portion at thevcenter of the curve at e, leaving the side pieces free to be pressed inward, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4.
Attached to the end of the spring-clamps,
the respiratorto the nose by clamping theA wings of the nose to the side of the respirator.
To secure Ithe respirator on the nose, the springs are pressed inward by means of the projecting arms sufficient to permit the lugs on the ends of the springs to enter the nostrils, when the case is then placed over the nose and pushed into position. Pressure is then removed, and the spring-clamps operate to hold the respirator in place. A similar operation will release the same.
The principal advantage of attaching the respirator to the nose in the manner I have described is that it facilitates breathing by enlarging the nostrils, so as to enable the wearer' to breathe entirely through the nose, and not lhave to use his mouth for breathing purposes, and thereby require another respirator to cover the lower portion of the face.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The case A, having a compartment, B, provided with a hinged bottom, D, the top and bottom of said compartment being perforated, and spring-clamps F F', having lugs c c and outwardly-projecting arms G G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own `I hereby affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT OTTO MOM ASTER.
