Description

y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. i
GARDNER CHILSON, OF BOSTON, MASSAHUSETTS.
iMPRovl-:M ENT |N BRILER'S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,361, dated May 27, 1862.
To all whom/t may concern.-
Beit known that I, GARDNER CHILsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing or doing business in Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Broiling Apparatus for a Stove or a Oooking-Range5- andI do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 denotes a top view, Fig. 2 a trans! verse section, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of my said invention, the same consist` Y cross bars ao a being channeled and inclined toward a gravyvtrough, b. From the rear part of the said grate a plate or heat-inter cepter, B, projects downward, and has in its rear an escape passage or opening, C, leading from a cover or case, D, which is-placed over and surrounds the gridiron, and is provided at its front part with an opening furnished with a door or flap, c, of a corresponding or proper size. Furthermore, at the rear part of the said gridiron a plate orguard, E, rises upward from the said gridiaron andextends ,from end to end of the case D. The arrangement of the said gridiron, its plates B and E, cover or case D, and escape-passage C is represented in the drawings, they being constructed in such manner that when placed on the boiler-opening of a stove or range, and so as to rest on the top plate of such stove or range, as the case may be, the plate B may extend within the opening and down or nearly down to the fuel or coals which may be in the fireplace below the opening. The gridiron and its case should be so constructed as while resting on the top plate of a stove the passage C should freely open into the interior of the stove. Under these circumstances the heat generated by the burning fuel, instead of passing directly off into the discharge-flue of the stove, will be more or less intercepted by the plate or deflector B, and in consequence thereof such heat will ascend between the bars of the gridiron and enter the case D, from whence, with the odors and vapors of the meat which may be in the act of being cooked on the gridiron, it will escape by going down through the opening C. Thus by means of my invention the heat of the fire of the stove or range may not only be applied to the lower side of a steak while being broiled, but more or less of it will go through the gridiron and be thrown or deiiected upon the upper side or surface of the meat, this latter being effected through the agency of the case D. By opening the door c the process of cooking may be viewedas circumstances may require.
The purpose of the guard E is to keep the steak from overlapping the opening-C. It is also advantageous in other respects.
I am aware that a frying-pan to rest over the opening in the top of a stove has had a cover applied to it, and the whole has been so made and arranged that the odors or vapors which may have arisen from meat or any other substance while being cooked or fried in such -pan have been forced to descend into the body of the stove and escape with the smoke proceeding from the fuel thereof. Therefore I do not claim such a device or arrangement of devices. My invention relates to a different apparatus-viz., one for broiling-.and while in use not only operates to so carry oi the odors'and vapors which may arise from a piece of meat while being cooked on the grid iron, and thus preventing them from entering the apartment or room in which the stove or range may be, but causes the heat of the coals of the fireplace to course upward between the bars of the gridiron and into the case D, from which it will subsequently escape by the opening C. Therefore What I claim as my invention is l. The combination and arrangement of the.
gridiron A, the cover or case D, the intercepting-plate B, and the escape-passage C.
2. The arrangement and combination of the guard E with the gridiron A and its case D, provided with an opening, C, and the intercepting-plate B, as described.
GARDNER GHILSON.
