Description

Dec. 2, 1969 c. R. suEss FLOOR DRAIN FOR INSTALLATION IN A FLOOR Filed May 9. 1967 Y mE E TU N s R VT O mw 6. n B A O R S E m A W H C United States Patent FLOOR ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE Consists `of a floor plate having a drain opening and having the material around the opening flanged outwardly to form a cone-shaped boss, and a drain tube having an upper end part of smaller outside diameter than the tube extending into the boss and expanded outwardly to secure the tube to the plate.
My invention relates to a floor drain for installation in a fioor and a primary object of my invention is to provide a simple and efiicient device which can be installed in a f ioor under an appliance in which water is used or stored, such for instance as a clothes Washer or a dish washer or a hot water tank, to drain off any water which may leak o 'r otherwise escape from the appliance onto the floor beneath it and in this way prevent the water from spreaditig over the floor around and outwardly from the area directly beneath the appliance.
i Another object is to provide an emergency fioor drain of inexpensive construction which is easy to install in a floor and easy to connect with a water disposal conduit under the floor so that the installation of a number of said oor drains in a building will not increase the cost of the building to an undesirable extent and will afford emergency p'rotection against the damage and inconvenience resulting from the leakage or spilling of water from appliances in which water is used or stored.
Another object is to provide a floor drain comprising a thin fiat floor plate having in it a drain opening surrounded by a transversely displaced tubular convergent conically shaped boss and a drain tube having an end portion of reduced external diameter extending into and expanded outwardly within said conical boss rigidly securing the drain tube to the floor plate.
Other objects of my invention will be apparent from the following description and accompanying drawings.
In the drawings FIGURE 1 is a top plan view, with parts broken away, of a floor drain embodying my invention.
FIG. 2 is a sectional view of the same taken on broken line 2 2 of FIG. 1. FIG. 3 is a fragmentary exploded sectional view, with arts in elevation, showing the iioorplate and drain tube (gli (IIGS. 1 and 2 as they appear before they are assem- FIG. 4 is a sectional view similar to FIG. 2 showing a modified form of the invention.

FFice The form of invention shown in FIGS. l, 2 and 3 comprises a fiat plate 10 formed of thin material, such as sheet metal or plastic. The plate 10 can be of any desired lexternal size and shape. Preferably it is substantially smaller than the base of the appliance under which it is used and a plate of from five to seven inches square has been found to be satisfactory. The plate 10 is provided near its margin with holes 11 to receive nails 12 by which it is secured to a floor 13. A hole 13 is provided in the floor 13 and, if desired, the floor 13 may be sloped slightly toward this hole 13'. The plate 10i is further provided with a drain opening 14 of any desired size and the material around the drain opening 14 is transversely displaced to form a downwardly convergent conical boss 15, the walls of which are preferably curved as shown.
A drain tube 16 is connected with the boss 15 and adapted to extent downwardly through the floor opening 13. Preferably the tube 16 is formed of plastic material which can be shaped by the application of heat and pressure. The upper end portion 17 of said tube 16 is made smaller in diameter than the remainder of said tube so that, in-assembly of said tube 16 and the plate 10, the part 17 can be inserted into the boss 1S and expanded outwardly against said boss 15 by the application of heat andl pressure and then finished ush with the top surface of the plate 10. The lower end of the boss 15 rests against the uppermost one of a plurality of spaced apart annular shoulders 18 on the tube 16 and the plate 10 and tube 16 are firmly secured in assembled relation. Obviously cement may be used between parts 15 and 17 if desired.
Preferably a screen 20 is provided within the upper end portion of the tube 16. The drain tube 16 is adapted to have a water disposal conduit or pipe 19 slipped over it. The conduit 19 is of suitable diameter to fit the tube 16 snugly and sufficiently elastic so it will bind on the shoulders 18 of the tube 16 and will not come off easily. The connection between conduit 19 and tube 16 is easily made even in locations of restricted area.
FIG. 4 shows an embodiment of my invention comprising a drain tube 22, preferably of plastic material, having a-n annular bead or rib 23 within its upper end portion. A floor plate 24 is provided with a drain opening 25 and has Athe material 26 which surounds said opening 25 displaced downwardly and outwardly so that it fits snugly within and over the annular rib 23 of tube 22 and firmly secures the plate 24 and tube 22 together. The drain tube 22 can have a coupling 27, also preferably of plastic, fitted over and adhesively secured to it and the coupling 27 can be internally threaded to receive an externally threaded water disposal pipe 28.
FIG. 5 shows an embodiment of my invention in which a floor plate 30 and a drain tube 31 are integral or of one piece construction and are preferably composed of plastic material. A plastic water disposal conduit 32 is adhesively secured to the drain tube 31. Preferably screens similar to the screen 20 shown in FIGS. l and 2 are provided in the upper end portions of the tubes 22 and 31 of FIGS. 4 and 5.
I claim:
1. A floor drain for installation in a fioor which is provided with an opening and is adapted to support a water receiving receptacle on the floor area containing said open- 3 ing, comprising a thin flat iloor plate having in it a drain opening adapted to register with the opening in the oor; a downwardly extending drain tube rigid with the oor plate and communicating with the drain opening in said floor plate and adapted to be received within the opening in the floor; an internal annular rib in the upper end of said drain tube; and said plate being provided with a transversely displaced outwardly and downwardly curved annular ange extending around the drain opening therein and fitting tightly within and over said internal annular rib of said drain tube rigidly and permanently securing said oor plate and drain tube together in assembled relation.
