The present invention relates to urinals, and particularly to an improved urinal for females.

Bed-confined female patients usually require the type of bcdpan on which the patient lies or sits. It often occurs that patients need the assistance of nurses to properly use such pans. While such bedpans are necessary for evacuation of the bowels, on occasions when there is only need to empty the bladder, much inconvenience has been heretofore encountered.

Female urinals are not new, but known devices of this sort are unsatisfactory in design due to the fact that urination by females at times involves a somewhat uncontrolled stream which sprays outwardly in devious directions, and use of known female urinals with the patient supine or sitting often results in leakage from the urinal onto the bed, chair and patient, requiring changing of the bed linen or cleaning of the upholstery and clothes.

The principal object of this invention is to provide a female urinal that will overcome the above and other difficulties encountered with known female urinals.

Another object of the invention is to provide such a urinal having an entrance that will conform to the con-- tour of the vulva area or region of the female body.

Still another object of the invention is to provide such a female urinal in which the entrance is removable from a container.

Another object of the invention is to provide such a urinal in which the entrance to the urinal includes a peripheral edge, the entire extent of which sealingly contacts the body of the user at a substantial distance from the urethra so as to prevent the escape of any spray from the stream of urination.

Still another object of the invention is to provide such a urinal in which the entrance thereto includes a contoured periphery which, when in proper place on the female, extends from a point in front of the urethra to a point in the region of the anus, and in which a complete sealing contact about the periphery of the entrance with the body of the user is assured.

Still another object of the invention is to provide such a urinal in which the entrance thereto is detachable from the body of the urinal.

In one aspect of the invention, a urinal may comprise a container of any desired form. The container may be entirely closed except for an entrance opening in a front wall thereof that may be circular and have a collar therearound with one or two pins thereon forming part of a bayonet connection to be described later.

In another aspect of the invention, a removable funnel-like member may include an annular end having slots therein adapted to form a bayonet connection with the pins on the collar of the container. Of course, other removable connecting means may be employed between the funnel-like member and the container, such as a tapered peripherally grooved nozzle that mates with an opening leading to the container.

In still another aspect of the invention, the funnel shaped member may flare outwardly and include a flared peripheral portion at its end opposite that which is adapted to be connected to the container.

In a further aspect of the invention, the flared peripheral portion may be contoured so as to extend from a point above the vulva, thence between the legs of the user, to a point in the region of the anus, while making a sealing contact throughout the entire extent of the flared periphery thereof with the body of the user.

The above, other objects and novel features of the invention will become apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawing which are merely exemplary.

FIG. 3 is an end view of the urinal shown in FIG. 2; and

FIG. 4 is a modified form of the invention.

Referring to the drawing, and particularly to FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, the principles of the invention have been shown as applied to a female urinal including a container 10 which in the embodiment disclosed is shown as being of box-like construction and which preferably is made from a plastic that may be a suitable degree of hardness. The container 10 is closed except for an entrance 11 that is surrounded by a collar 12 and is located somewhat above a bottom Wall of the container.

Collar 12 may include pins 14 for a purpose to be described later, and it may slidingly lit in sealing relation within a collar 15 of a funnel-shaped member 16. The member 16 may be detached from the container 10 for sanitary reasons and may make a quickly attachable connection with container 10. In the embodiment disclosed in FIGS. 1-3, the connection is shown as a bayonet type of connection including slots 17 on collar 15 that cooperate with pins 14 on collar 12.

The funnel-shaped member 16 includes a flared portion 18 having a specific peripheral contour edge 19 adapted sealingly to fit against the body of the user throughout its entire extent covering a relatively large area around the urethra of the user.

The peripheral edge 19 of member 16 may comprise a portion 20 which, when properly in place, contacts the body of the user above the vulva. The peripheral edge 19 may also include portions on each side of the portion 20, curving downwardly and adapted to fit snugly against the body of the user between the legs. A lower extremity or portion 21 is so constructed that in use it extends to and sealingly contacts the body at a point adjacent the anus of the user.

The portion 21 is at the outer extremity of a substantially straight wall portion 22 that is slightly above the bottom 13 of the container 10. A groove or channel 23 is formed on the inner side of wall 22 to facilitate the draining of urine into the container 10.

From the foregoing it is evident that when properly used by a female, the entire peripheral edge of the funnelshaped member 16 contacts the body of the user from a point above the vulva to a point adjacent the anus and prevents leakage of any urine onto the bed upon which the patient reposes.

Referring to FIG. 4, the container 24 includes an opening 25 having an inclined inner peripheral surface 26 adapted to receive a tapered nozzle 27 having peripheral grooves 28 therein. The nozzle 27 is connected to a funnel-shaped member 29 similar to the member 16 of FIG. 1.

Although the various features of the improved female urinal have been shown and described in detail to fully disclose two embodiments of the invention, it will be evident that changes may be made in such details and certain features may be used without others without departing from the principles of the invention.

What is claimed is:

1. A portable urinal comprising in combination, a boxlike container having an entrance opening; and a funnelshaped flexible plastic member connected directly to the opening in said container and readily removable therefrom and connectable thereto, said funnel-shaped member having a peripheral edge, the entire extent of which sealingly fits against the body of a female user from a point above the urethra to a point adjacent to the anus of said user, wherein the portion of said peripheral edge which lies adjacent to the anus of said user is along a straight line leading toward said container and wherein there is a recessed channel portion along the inner surface of said portion which is along said straight line.

A portable urinal comprising in combination, a boxlike container having an entrance opening, and a funnelshaped flexible plastic member connected directly to the opening in said container and readily removable therefrom and connectable thereto, said funnel-shaped member having a peripheral edge, the entire extent of which sealingly fits against the body of a female user from a point above the urethra to a point adjacent to the arms of said user and wherein said funnel-shaped member is connected directly to said opening of said container by means of a bayonet connection.

A portable urinal comprising in combination a boxlike container having an entrance opening; and a funnelshaped flexible plastic member connected directly to the opening in said container and readily removable therefrom and connectable thereto, said funnel-shaped member having a peripheral edge, the entire extent of which sealingly fits against the body of a female user from a point above the urethra to a point adjacent to the anus of said user, and wherein said funnel-shaped member is connected directly in said opening of said container by a tapered nozzle-like connection.
